FC: Computer Ethics Story Example

For this assignment you'll be using Mixbook to write a short story applying computer ethics to a real life situation. You can add take photos with our digital camera, find pictures online, or scan in your own drawings to add illustrations.

One day Joe and Tom were bored at home. "I am so bored!" said Joe. "I am so sick of sitting here staring at the computer screen."

"Hey, I've got an idea. You know what would be funny? We could mess with Katie," said Tom.

"What do you have in mind?" asked Joe. "We could send her an email and when she opens it we could infect her computer with a virus. When she tries to close the email her entire computer will shut down. She will freak out! It will be hilarious!" said Tom.

"Won't we get in trouble?" asked Joe. "No way," said Tom. "No one will know it was us. Besides, we can always fix it later."

Tom and Joe looked up how to make a virus on the Internet and put their own together. Then they emailed Katie and attached the virus to the email. "This is going to be so funny!" Joe laughed.

Meanwhile, Katie was finishing up her homework when she decided to check her email. "Oh cool, Joe emailed me. I wonder what he wants."

"Wait...what's going on....why is my computer doing this?"

The next day at school: "Hey Katie, how's it going?" Joe asked. "Yeah, did you get our email?" Tom snickered.

"It was awful," Katie complained. "My computer shut down all of a sudden and now I can't get it to come back on. I couldn't finish my paper for Language Arts and Mrs. Jones won't give me an extra day. So now I'm going to fail the assignment and maybe even the whole class!"

"Even worse, my Mom blames me for breaking the computer. She has to take it in to be fixed and she's making me pay for it. I've been saving my money for months and now it's all gone." Katie cried. "My Mom and Dad both use the computer for work and they are furious at me. They grounded me until further notice and I won't be allowed to use the computer any more. This is the worst week of my life"

After Katie left, Joe turned to Tom. "We've got to fix this, Tom. Katie is my friend--I didn't mean to get her into trouble."

Tom looked embarressed. "I don't really know how to fix it." "What do you mean!? You told me we could fix it later!" Joe groaned. "I though we could," Tom confessed. "I guess I was wrong. Don't worry, no one will know it was us."

The next day at school: "Hey Joe! Guess what? The computer repair guy told my Mom that someone sent a virus to our computer so it wasn't my fault! He is trying to find the IP address of the person who sent it to us so we can bust him! Whoever it is is going to be in big trouble!"

Joe dragged Tom into the hallway. "We are so busted! What are we going to do?" Just then Principal McCrane strolled around the corner. "Joe and Tom, just who I was looking for. Your parents are on the phone in the office. Apparently the police are at your house and want to talk to the both of you."

"It'll be fun!?!" Joe yelled at Tom. "No one will know it was us!?! Now we've got the police at our house, our parents are going to kill us and Katie will never talk to us again. This was the dumbest thing I've ever done. I wish I never send that stupid email!"
