Where Cranberries are grown? Cranberries are grown in bogs. In case you don't know what a 'bog' is I'll tell you. A bog is usually near some soft, marshy ground,or wetland area. During the harvest season, water is pumped in and out so it gets really wet in the marsh areas. Cranberries grow on long vines in sandy bogs and marshes. Places like Cape Cod usually are in mind when you think of a cranberry bog. But there are also farms all over North America: Massachusetts, New Jersey, Oregon, Washington, Wisconsin, and Tennessee.

How it is grown/ steps in its production Winter Cranberry bogs are flooded from late December through the middle weeks in March. A layer of sand is put on to the cranberry bog every few years. People who grow cranberries often will remove small bushes and trees around the perimeter of the bog. Fall The cranberry harvest takes place once a year from the middle of September through early November. To help with frost, people will probably sprinkle a bit of water to help. Spring When warmer weather comes, usually March, growers remove the winter flood. Just like in the fall they usually sprinkle some water but this time to " wake up" the seeds ( yes they have seeds but they are too small to see) from last year. Summer The old rule was that cranberries require up to one inch of water per week during the growing season, and that still might be true. Most growers will have spray for pest to help them with the bugs. 2

How its processed Choose a period of time between mid-September and early November to process your cranberries. Prepare your bogs and ditches for flooding. A bog, is a wide, open wetland or a field where cranberries are planted. Walk behind a special raking machine to remove cranberries from the vines when collecting the cranberries. Use the machine to collect the berries in sacks or in boxes to be shipped to fresh fruit warehouses or processing plants for testing and cleaning. Stir the water in the bogs by using a water reel machine when you're wet harvesting. This process also removes the cranberries from the vines and allows them to float to the water's surface. Gather the berries with a wooden or plastic boom machine. Use a conveyor to pack them into a truck. Send the cranberries to a warehouse or plant to be tested and cleaned. 3

Jobs in the Cranberry field All of the jobs that have to do cranberries are very important. The jobs that I found are: making the bog area, planting the cranberry plants, making sure there is enough water (they need a lot of water), finding a place where they will sell your project, finding someone to make sure that you have the right equipment, making sure that the equipment runs correctly and many other jobs. 5

Products The usual cranberry products are juice, sauce, and sweetened dried cranberries, and others are sold fresh. Cranberries are a part of many recipes such as seafoods, chicken, pot roasts, and different desserts. In the present time there are about 48,000 acres of cranberry bogs in Massachusetts compared to Wisconsin covering 110,000 acres. The difference of Massachusetts' and Wisconsin's cranberry bog area is 62,000 acres. The total amount for all of these states is 670000 miles, if the cranberry bogs were laid from end to end. New Jersey has 3,911 acres, and again Wisconsin has 110,000 acres. The difference between Wisconsin's acres and New Jersey's acres is 106,089. This may not be the total for all the bogs in New Jersey, because they are scattered throughout the state . Oregon is 6.6% of all of the U.S.A.'s amount of cranberry bog. In Washington state the Cranberry Bog area is an area that is reserved for cranberries and measures 29.5 sq ft. 6

Health Benefits Scientific research shows that cranberries and cranberry products contain important amounts of antioxidants that may help protect against heart disease, cancer and other diseases. Research says cranberry juice can stop bacteria from becoming an infection. Researchers think that cranberries or cranberry juice will stop plaque from staying on your teeth and from staying on the gums of your mouth. They also think that cranberries may kill cancer cells inside your body. 7
