Towns sprung up along streams and rivers during the industrial revolution, they appeared along rivers and streams because the water power could power factories and provide food and water. | They also made towns and factories along rivers and streams because their product could be transferred to coastal shipping cities faster and easier than bringing them in wagons or carts across land. Also while traveling across water weather does not affect it that much, unlike land.

Some older cities such as New York City and Boston became major cities of trade as crops from the farms in the West and factories along rivers in the East.

The fastest growing towns in the East where industrial towns built upon major rivers, in the West they were agricultural towns established by the first western settlers. | West | East

Buildings were built different in cities than today. Back then buildings were made of wood and brick. Both of which were more flammable than materials today. This added much fire danger to moving to cities. Even with these dangers people continued to move to cities.

Also in cities diseases like Yellow fever and malaria festered in the cities. One reason was there was no sewers so waste was in all the streets. Also people did not know to wash their hands so they barely did.
