FC: Atoka Elementary School Mrs. Nicole Walker's Kindergarten

1: What is a Kindergarten Class? A Kindergarten Class is a group of 5 and 6 year olds, none of whom look, act, think, behave, talk, or grow in the same way. They have stars in their eyes and loose teeth, questions on their minds, and band-aids on their knees, forgiveness in their hearts and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in their lunches. Kindergarteners are able to put more things on a teacher's desk during the first minute of school than any other class can accomplish in a full day - flowers they picked from their yard, six wilted leaves, a pretty rock, a favorite book, a dead bug. A Kindergartener is able to steal all of a teacher's time with just a little evenly divided, unplanned effort... a skinned knee, lost lunch, broken zipper, untied shoelace, upset tummy, a runny nose, and needed affection. A Kindergartener is eager to inform his/her teacher of all the latest developments at home. She knows who in the family had a birthday and the gifts they received. She must look at every pair of shoes and she most definitely knows about and sees every Power Ranger, Super Hero Character, Justin Bieber shirt and Princess doll. A Kindergartener spends much time on the teacher's feet, but more time in her thoughts. They can turn her stomach during lunch and her heart during dinner. They spill paint on her dress and satisfaction in her soul. They greet her with a smile at 7:45 a.m. and leave her with a headache at 2:30 p.m. They take everything out of her but give more back when they leave a note on her desk written in poor manuscript but with deepest feelings --- I LOVE YOU! IT'S DEFINITELY WORTH IT!

27: On the Last Day of School A quiet tension fills the room on this last day of school. I expected exuberance and rowdiness, But that came yesterday, when there was still one day to go. Today the children are disturbingly subdued. I am embarrassed at my own emotions; I cannot look at the children directly. The room is so blank. Our desks are cleaned out. The last traces of the party have been swept away. The charts and posters are down for the summer. So now we sit quietly, Too wrought even for songs and games, and we wait for the buses to come. I expect to see these children again, of course, But it won't be the same. They know it, and I know it. They will come around to see me, Jealous of the new class, And I will look at a room of little strangers, and miss the familiar faces. In time, the strangers will become friends, But every class is different and special. No new group will ever take the place of the one leaving me today. We have worked hard, and I have loved these little children dearly. As hard as it will be, it is time I let them go. I love you!
