FC: Elijah's Journal By:Max#1

Entry #1 Have you ever lived when there are slaves? My name is Elijah and I live in a little place called Buxton. My best friend is Cooter and I’m 11 years old. A lot of people say that I threw up on Mr. Douglass for thirty minutes, but I think that they are all crazy. Also, the preacher says I have a gift from the lord because I can throw chunking-stones with dead accuracy. My daily chores are going to the stables to clean, going to Chatman for mail, get fish for people, and lots more. I was also a free born child, which means when I was born I wasn’t a slave. So lets just say I am a lucky child except for the point that I am so fra-gile.

Journal entry #2 Many bad things happen in my life, but nothing like this. It was on nice sunny day when Mr. Leroy got enough money to free his family from slavery. The day after he got the money, he came to our house to talk about it with my dad. Then the preacher came in. When my dad and the preacher left to prepare Mr. Leroy, he asked me a question nobody has asked me before. He asked”Should I trust the preacher?” I said yes but that is when I made the mistake. One day, Mr. Highgate came to Buxton and said the preacher shot him. It turned out the preacher was using the money to gamble. Me and my dad came to tell Mr. Leroy but he started chasing me with his ax! I must have ran in circles for a long time until something grabbed my collar. It was dad. He told me they were having a meeting and he could not come. So now I can’t do anything about the money. GREAT!

Journal entry #3 Holy snakes! One dark night, Cooter and I played a trick on my Ma. we put a toady- frog in my Ma’s knitting basket. So she opened it and the toady frog jumped on to her! Cooter and I laughed so hard that we could not breath any more. The next day, my Ma said that Mrs. Holton gave us cookies. Sadly, I had to finish my chores first. So I finished the stables and the rest of the chores. I went on the porch and grabbed a cookie. For only it wasn’t a cookie, but a snake! I ran about two miles. There will be no more pranks.

Journal entry #4 It had been a long time without and free slaves, but finally some arrived today. One afternoon, me, Cooter, and my dad were on Mrs. Holtons land working. Then out of nowhere, someones head popes out of a tree. I said “Dad, there’s people out there”. He told to get the one and only brat, Emma Collins. Emma is good at making slaves feel welcome and safe. She got them out of the forest and me and Cooter rang the “liberty bell” 100 times. It was so loud, but luckily, we had these things to cover our ears. Everybody came out of their houses and welcomed the slaves. There were five of them. A mother, father, little girl, little boy, and a baby. I was so excited, it had been months without free slaves that came.

Journal #5 I love my life, well not necessarily all the time. But most of the time I do. Anyway, I went to the stables where Mr. Leroy told me to do ‘fore he died. I went in and it was completely dark. Then I heard something. Somebody was here! My eyes started to adjust to the dark and I saw a figure with four arms! Except when I came closer it wasn’t a four armed monster but it was a whole family with a mother holding a baby! I was so suprised I nearly jumbed out of my shoes! They told me to get the pail of water outside and when I came back they were drinking the water like mad people. I told them I can help them get back and Canada was only an hour a way. But they said they have to stay. I went to get Mr. Alston but he didn’t believe me. I came back and and they told me to bring their baby back to Buxton. So I rode hard back to Buxton. It was probably the most scariest and most adventurous day of my life.

Journal Entry #6 If I could spend a day with Elijah I would want to see everything in Buxton first I would want to meet his parents. Then, I would like to see the stables and ride Flap Jack to Chatman. Next, I would want to meet Cooter and his family. I would want to see the woods and see how well he can throw chunking-stones. I would want meet Mr. Travis and the rest of the teachers. I would want to meet Emma Colins and meet the rest of the people in Buxton. Then I would show him our modern day stuff and video games. We would play together and then he would have to leave. Now I really do want to meet him.
