BC: MORAL OF THE STORY | The theme of the story is not to count your chickens before they hatch. Kino was already thinking of how to spend his money from the pearl and never even got the money. He lost his son because of it. The pearl brought evil and darkness to the family's life. I believe you should never count on something to happen.

2: John Steinbeck | 1902-1968 | AUTHOR
3: John was born in Salinas, California. He didn't have a degree. He wrote mainly fiction novels. After writing many novels, as a now married man, he finally went to school as a marine biologists. He got married multiple times. John traveled a lot with his third wife. He won a Nobel prize 6 yeas prior to his death.
4: SETTING | SETTING | : La Paz, Mexico | La Paz got its name from Sebastian Vizcanio in 1596. Before the Spanish tried to take over the land was settled by Indians. Their culture consisted of hand crafted items, and the deep rooted traditions of their ancestors.
5: <-- Where the Doctor would stay. He was wealthy. | --> Where Kino and his family would stay. They were poor.
6: Characters | Juana is the husband of Kino. Like many past wives, she was extremely respectful and always usually peaceful. She stood by her husband no matter what. | Kino is the main character. He is very superstitious and is afraid of evil. He is a proactive thinker; he think ahead of time. He love his son and wife.
7: Coytito is Juana and Kino's infant child. He spends the whole story suffering from a scorpion sting. So, it's very sad to watch a child suffer for so long. | The pearl buyers are deceitful. They try their best to scam you. The three buyers try their best to lie their way into only paying the minimum.
8: Chapter One | Kino and Juana live in a brush house. THat means they are poor. They live on a beach in La Paz, Mexico. THey have a baby named Coytito. In chapter one, the baby accidentally gets stung by a scorpion in the house. Kino and Juana took the baby to the doctor, but the doctor refused to help a poor family, like Kino's.
9: Chapter Two | As the baby is trying to recover from the sting, the family goes out on a pearl hunt. Pearls were a big deal there. The finding of a pearl could mean the discovery of wealth. Kino dived into the water and comes up with what could be the pearl that solves everything. As it turns out he finds "the pearl of the World."Kino thought of everything good coming their way, and he was overwhelmed with joy.
10: C H A P T E R T H R E E | Soon, the whole town knew of the family's sudden wealth. Kino stared thinking of all the things he wanted. He wanted to get married, heal Coytito, buy a rifle, and to be able to provide and education for Coytito.
11: Chapter Four | Kino goes to get his money for he pearl. The pearl buyers are deceitful. He goes to the first buyer and the man says his pearl is not worth that much because it is too large. He offers his 1,500 pesos. Kino was not satisfied. He went to two other buyers but neither of them offered a higher price. He became frustrated and decides to travel to the capitol for a better price.
12: Chapter Five | Kino and his family start their journey to the capitol. Before they leave they went to get their boat, but Kino noticed the boat had a hole in it. He thought it had to be from the trackers following them. So, they start the journey on foot. The family has to be very cautious while walking because there are three trackers trying to find the family. They hide behind bushes and erase their steps in the sand. The family stays the night in a cave that wouldn't be seen by the trackers.
13: CHAPTER | 6 | The family is staying in the cave as the trackers lay next to a pond near the cave. Kino plans to kill the trackers. He sneaks out of the cave and takes his clothes off so that he blends with the darkness of the night. As he leaps to kill the tracker Coytito whimpers from the cave. The tracker turns around and shoots towards the cave because he thought it was a coyote. The family walks back to town defeated without their son Coytito. He was the "coyote" the tracker shot at. Kino and Juana felt the evilness of the pearl. They threw the pearl back into the sea. Now, the will no longer suffer from the evil pearl. The pearl costs them a house, their sanity, and most of all their son.
