FC: My Journey to America! | By Josh Sizer

 Hello America!

December 19, 1914, 9:40 a.m. My name is Josh Sizer. I have mixed feelings about going to America. I do know that I will miss Sydney, Australia. I am sad and scared because I will be leaving all my friends. I have no idea what is out in the great country of America. On the other hand, I am very happy. My family is in poverty at the moment, and their thinking that going to a new place will give them a chance to start a new life. I am also hoping that I will have lots of new opportunities to do things. I have always dreamt of playing the piano. The only thing is that there is nobody that will teach me the fine art. They aren’t just being mean; they just can’t afford to have a piano. I’ll be getting on the boat in half an hour. I’ve heard stories about the long trip, the freezing temperatures on deck, and having the same meal everyday. Some people start to wonder if they will ever get to the U.S.A. and then they see it. The towering Statue of Liberty with its book in hand, and its torch raised high above its head. I can’t wait to see that sight!

December 27, 1914, 7:33 p.m. I have been on the ship for 8 days now. It hasn’t been as bad as I thought it would be. Yes, the deck is VERY cold, even when I bring my blanket up. I have had the same meal, three times a day, every single day. And of course, it has been a long trip, a week and a day. Despite these things, it has been a good journey so far. In fact, a person accidentally bumped into me this morning. He seemed truly sorry about what she did, so I invited him to sit with me at lunch. His name is Giovanni, and he is now my friend. I have made about 3 new ones since the time I got on the ship. All of the people here seem to be really nice!

January 1, 1915, 11:14 a.m. I see it! The Statue of Liberty is right there! Man, I am so excited. For the past 6 days, I have been just waiting, and waiting to finally see this beautiful sight. I hope the wait at Ellis Island isn’t too long! It’s kind of funny how I finally get to America on the first day of the new year. | January 2, 1915, 3:40 a.m. I have been awake all night long, waiting in lines that seemed to be endless. When it was our turn in each of the lines, I asked my dad to be as quick as possible so we wouldn’t hold up the line of people waiting. Luckily, with the physical examination, my whole family was in perfect health. You do not know how anxious I was to get out of there and start my new life in this new country. We had to take a intelligence test too. I passed, and the person said that I should do great in school. That really made me feel good!

February 4, 1915, 2:15 p.m. We are in a place called Miami, Florida. It has been really hot, and I love it! I have settled in to our new house that we recently got. It is quite cozy. I even have my own room! I have started school, and I really like it. There are a few mean kids, but most of them are nice. The person I met on my sea journey, Giovanni, is in the same class as me. The food here in America is completely different from Australia. So is the wildlife. My mom and dad didn’t have much trouble getting a job. They had one interview and they were instantly accepted. This new life I have sure is great!
