FC: Living on the Moon by Cyndi Orsburn

Since seeing the video where man first stepped foot on the moon, Rio had imagined living on the moon. He knew it would require some changes to the spaceships we presently had. We needed to modify them to accommodate a larger crew and to carry more cargo. Settlers on the moon will need oxygen, water, power, food ,and building materials. We found water in the lunar soil and discovered a simple process to extract it. This solved one problem for settlers.

Rio knew housing on the moon would need to accommodate a wide range of temperature changes Iron, aluminum and titanium found in the soil are used to build along with lunar concrete. | During the day, it can hit 101 degrees C and at night, it can be -184 degrees C. This is almost a 300 degree change, he thought. Wow! Life is sure different on the moon. There is little atmosphere on the moon to keep it warm at night or protect it from the sun's radiation.

Rio knew we would need to develop ways to get oxygen. Lunar soil contains a mixture of oxygen, titanium and iron. We built a plant to extract oxygen. We are also using hydroponics in domes to grow crops and we raise goats, sheep pigs and poultry, too.

Rio had his crew could set up solar power plants on the moon. The moon receives solar energy at higher levels than earth and for a longer time period than the earth does. We help supply the earth with solar power as well as provide our own power on the moon. There is a place on the south pole called the "Peak of Eternal Light" which would be the perfect location for a power plant. There is always sunlight there and it has been a great place to set camp.

Rio was proud to help establish colonies on the moon. As the earth became more crowded, colonists settled on the moon just as they once settled in the new world across the Atlantic Ocean thousands of years ago. He was proud of his role as colony leader. The settlement is a site of commerce and science research. Mining, solar power and tourism are thriving here.

We have had to develop new technology to live on the moon, Rio thought to himself. We needed to increase our knowledge and innovate to solve the challenges presented to us by such a hostile environment, but we did it! Recycling has allowed us to turn human waste into fertilizer and urine into potable water. Carbon dioxide is used to make oxygen. Recycling rules!

Man has dreamed of living on the moon for centuries, Rio thought to himself. He looked at the pictures on the pages of the e-book. On the bottom was an 1895 sketch of a goldmine on the moon, and the top picture was a 1934 sketch from a sci-fi novel, The Moon Pirates. How lucky I am to be here, he thought. Man seems to need to blaze new trails and explore. Thank goodness the fears about aliens and the stories about the man in the moon and green cheese are part of the past. The moon rocks!

?so long, humans have spent nights looking up in the sky at the moon, Rio thought. Now, it is common to look up in the night sky at the earth from the moon, just as I am doing right now.Wow! No wonder tourism is the next big industry on the moon. There goes the neighborhood!
