FC: The Need to Look Powerful and Wealthy
People will go to extreme lengths to obtain and maintain power and wealth. People even go to extreme lengths to convey the image of power and wealth. For some it may mean going into debt, or others just barely making ends meet. Many people believe they are judged on what they wear, drive, or own; not on who they are. The media and outside world is one of the most prominent contributors to our misguided values and horibble spending habits.
Credit cards are the leading cause of the horrible spending habbits of people. | To many people believe credit is having money, when in fact they dont have cash . So people buy things that they can't possibly afford. They think everything is fine until that bill at the end of the month shows up. The result is they end up in overwhelming debt.
People seriously believe that they are judged by what they wear. So,they buy things they absolutely do not need. For example a diamond studded Rolex. Which retails between $10,000 to $25,000. | A person who can't afford a $25,000 dollar watch can go to walmart and buy a watch that is less expensive, and has the same look and feel. Or if a person just must have designer watch, then buy a Mavado which retails between $600-$4000.
If a person cant afford a $313,000 car the more sensible thing would be to buy a cheaper, yet appealing car. For example a chrysler 300 which costs $39,000 . | There are also some who believe that they are judged on what kind of car they drive. So, they go out and purchase an expensive car like a Lamborghini for 313,000. For some that is the price of a house.
So they buy $569,000 home (left) instead of buying a more affordable $200,000 home (bottom) this is the fastest way to obtain debt. | A few people even believe they are judged on the type house that they live in. They think people judge them on how big or elegant the house is.
Many people think they need have latest gadgets. Such as new cell phones, ipods, and computers. Substantively there is no difference between these two ipods. They both have the same amount of memory, both play videos, and both play music. But the iPod touch is almost $500 while iPod classic is $200.
Another problamatic area for people is the unrealistic need to wear expensive designer label clothing. A coat from Versace (top) cost $3001. | A coat from Bloomingdales' (bottom) only cost $209, and the two coats are almost identical. The Versace coat is more than 10 times the cost of the from Bloomingdales.
