1: Eugenia Collier 1928-2003 | "One cannot have both compassion and innocence."

2: About the Author | Collier was born in a racially segregated neighborhood in Baltimore, Maryland in 1928. | She came from a well educated family one a physician and the other a teacher.

3: Collier herself attended Howard University where she majored in English literature. | After graduating she attended Columbia University in New York and received her masters degree in Art in 1948.

4: Needless to say Eugenia was well educated at a young age. | She taught English Literature at numerous universities and colleges until she retired in 1992.

5: "Marigolds" was her first published short story and it won the Gwendolyn Brooks award for fiction in 1969.

6: The meaning of marigolds | Most of the time there is a moment in someones life where one realizes they have lost all innocence and gained some compassion. Marigolds shows how one young girl transferred from a child to young adult through her life . Throughout this story another young, but at the same time old , lady's experiences are revealed. In the short story Marigolds, Eugenia Collier's feelings are unmasked through symbolism, diction, and Lizabeth's actions.
