1: Mary Elizabeth Bowser was born a slave to the VanLew Family in 1839.

2: In 1843 Mary and her family were freed.

3: Mary continued to work as a paid servant for Ms. VanLew. | Ms. VanLew

4: Ms. VanLew sent Mary to the Quaker school for Negroes so she could learn to read and write

5: After schooling, Mary went to work as a slave in the confederate white house for Jefferson Davis | She took up the name Ellen Bond | Jefferson Davis

6: Most Confederate meetings were held in the confederate White House | Since they thought Mary was dumb, they let her be in the meetings while they talked

7: Mary passed this information to Thomas McNivin, who passed it to the union leaders | "[She] had a photographic mind. Everything she saw on the rebel President's desk, she could repeat word for word." -McNivin

8: She worked in the White House for many years, passing information without being suspected

9: Suspicion finally fell on Mary in 1865. | She fled the White House immediately

10: Years later, she tried to burn down the confederate capital, but she failed.

11: Later, the Government destroyed all records of her so she could avoid persecution.
