Museum Visit - Page Text Content

Another visit to the HIGH MUSEUM OF ART in Atlanta, Ga.

This is the reception desk/area in the lobby of the main building of the museum. The staff here was very helpful. They even assisted me with my new digital camera!

This is one of the glassy, classy hallways that attaches the museum offices and buildings.

Here are Stephens and Logan. Although they are officially on the security staff, they can also be considered docents because they had so much information on the art work. Specifically the two pieces shown here.

Stephens told me that the interesting thing about these two paintings done by the same artist is that with the seemingly poorer blacks (on the left) they actually owned their land, whereas the more prosperous ones on this page are now renters; no longer owners of the land they live on.

This is my favorite exhibit at the museum. It is located in the Folk Art section. It is depicting a rural church setting, and I like it because it has movable parts. The curator is traditionally in charge of the collections and exhibits in the museums, recommends objects for exhibition after researching, studying the present collection and deciding what pieces would work best . Some curator made the right choice with this one!

This is Emmanuel, another security staff person who could also be considered a docent because of his extensive knowledge of this particular collection of African Art. Unfortunately, he had the same attitude towards this exhibit that I have. He too, and so have others voiced, that they are quite disappointed with this representation of Africa and its people. The curator is also responsible for ill-received work in the museum. Emmanuel says that she's a 'nice lady' but nice doesn't always cut it.

Although curators are responsible for organizing the exhibitions, developing the themes and choosing objects, writing text and overseeing the installations, these same responsibilities are now in the hands of many education departments so, curators are not alone in what works in an exhibit and what does not.

I asked if I could get a picture of a curator or education office person for this assignment, but was told that noone was in on that day by the head of security.
