About the Large Intestine, Appendix, Rectum, and Sphincter Location Size and shape Function Relationship Basic Diseases
The large intestine is divided into 1. Colon ascending transverse descending sigmoid 2. Cecum appendix 3. Rectum
The Colon A tube about 1.5 meters long, the colon is the part of the digestive system between the terminal ileum and anus. It is a bit wider than the small intestine. Its purpose is to remove water and electrolytes from the feces passing through it.
The Appendix The appendix also has an important role. When the body has to get rid of the contents of the intestine, it will stimulate diarrhea. The appendix will store some of the bacteria in the intestine, so that they can be repopulated.
The Rectum The rectum is the last part of the large intestine. It is about twelve inches long in a human. The rectum stores feces until it can be defecated.
The Anal Sphincters The function of the anal sphincters is to hold in feces until defecation, when they open. There are two sphincters, the internal sphincter that the body opens (involuntary) and the external one that you open (voluntary). At least once a day, the internal sphincter opens, creating an urge to defecate.
Basic Diseases of the Large Intestine Diarrhea Constipation Inflammation Tumors Cancers Appendicitis
The causes of diarrhea Infections bacteria viruses protozoa Inflammation Irritation toxins poisons food (fiber >>>)
Treatment of diarrhea Determine cause and treat the cause Bacteria treat with antibiotics Viruses- only supportive treatment with hydration and electrolytes Eliminate the cause, like poison or toxin
Constipation Causes are not enough fiber not enough liquid in the diet obstruction by tumor
Treatment of constipation Increase hydration Increase fiber Laxatives Eliminate of obstruction
Goblet Cells Goblet Cells are small goblet-shaped cells in the large intestine that produce mucus when touched. This helps prevent constipation. These cells also connect to nerves that fire when you are relaxed. This means that stress could contribute to constipation.
Tumors and cancers We don't know all the reasons of colon cancer, but chronic constipation and lack of fiber increase the risk of cancer
treat tumors by surgery treat cancer by surgery, chemotherapy and radiation
Appendicitis Appendicitis is when there is swelling in the appendix. If not treated, the appendix could burst and spread infection in your bloodstream Causes of Appendicitis -Blocking of Appendix -Infection in the Body
Symptoms of Appendicitis -Abdominal pain, usually starting just above the belly button and then moving to the right lower side of the abdomen -Nausea -Vomiting -Abdominal swelling -Pain when the right side of the abdomen is touched -Low-grade fever -Inability to pass gas -Change in normal bowel pattern
