 “My Life“ By Nicholas Miller
12 Stories & 12 Photos from the life of Nick Miller, 13 years old
This is a photo taken in the year I was born. I am about 6 months old in the picture but I don’t remember anything about this year. I guess it is pretty normal for a baby not to remember much about the year it was born. My parents told me that I really liked to play with this mirror. They had it sitting on the floor in our living room and they’d sit me down in front of it. I would burst out laughing and try to touch the baby in the mirror. My mom says this is one of her favorite pictures of me.
My first birthday: The year 1999 This is a photo of me on my 1st birthday, shortly before Easter. Once again I don’t remember anything about this year but I think I look pretty happy in the picture even so I wish my parents would not have me wear the goofy hat. I am sitting in my stroller in our front yard. I was told that I went for lots of stroller rides outside when the weather was halfway decent. Maybe that is why I like cars and trucks so much nowadays ? I don’t know but it could be.
My brand new brother Tim in 2000 The year 2000 was a big year for me because I became a big brother. I look sort of skeptic in the photo but also curious. The baby in the car seat is my younger brother. His name is Tim Maximilian Henry John Miller. He is just one day old in the photo. My mom said the picture was taken in front of the house where my brother was born. If I would have known all the trouble that comes with having a little brother I think I would not have looked so cheerful.
2001 Now I am 3 years old and I do not remember much about being three. It is hard to write something about a time in your own life of which you don’t remember anything or not much. I hope I had a good time and a lot of fun when I was three. I think I do look pretty happy in the picture. This photo was taken in the Sears Photo studio in Muncie. Most of my other pictures are photos snapped by my family.
Winter-Wonderland (2002) I was almost 4 years old when this photo was taken in our yard. I have always enjoyed winter and playing in the snow. When it snows we bundle up and go outside to play. Our family also likes to go sledding. We usually go to Mounds State Park near Anderson to sled; it is great fun and never very crowded there. You might notice that I do not wear glasses in this picture which I otherwise always do. Because of the snow however I do not wear them since they get foggy and covered in ice and snow and then I cannot see anything.
The big red slide (2003) This photo was taken at the playground near Royerton Elementary School. Royerton is not very far away from our house. We sometimes went to this playground when I was little. I do not remember much about this slide but my mom told me that I always enjoyed it very much. The slide was swirled and when you slid down, you kind of went down in circles. I liked doing that several times in a row. I also liked the rest of the playground but the slides were my favorite. I have not been to this playground in a long time now and I probably do not fit on the slide anymore.
My first day in Kindergarten (2004) I actually don’t recall much about my first day in Kindergarten at Burris. Mrs. Huffman was my teacher and when I attended Kindergarten it was still a half day and not a whole day like it is now. I was a student in the morning class that began at 08.00 A.M. We learned about a lot different things in Kindergarten like dinosaurs and baking or addition/subtraction and reading. I think I remember that reading was my favorite thing. Mrs. Huffman had a lot of books in her classroom so there were many books to choose from. I was a slow reader but I still liked reading.
Santa Clauses Brothers (2005) This photo was taken in winter close to Christmas. My mom wanted to take a picture of my brother and I wearing Santa hats that she had bought for us. The photo turned out pretty well I think. Christmas in our house is always exciting. We go to a tree farm near Springport, IN , and pick the biggest tree we can fit in our living room. We drive home with the tree tied to the roof of our car. My Dad is always worried that the wind might blow the tree off the car. He checks the rear-view mirror every ten seconds in case the tree is flying away but so far that has never happened.
Trains, Trains, Trains (2006) This photo was taken in a village called “Stockheim” (which is in Germany). The village is small but has a pretty big train station. It also has a model train museum. The museum is located in the main building of the train station and has a very big model-railroad display. The engines in this photo are all diesel powered. The photo is of my brother, my grandma “ Oma Gerda” and myself. We always go to see train stations and take train rides when we visit her. It is a lot of fun and I enjoy it.
My grandma and cousin visit (2007) In the year 2007 my uncle and his family and also my grandma visited us in Indiana. My uncle had rented a white Jeep Grand Cherokee to drive around in. Our entire family made a trip to Summit Lake which is about hour away from our house. The photo shows my grandma,my brother Tim, my cousin Carol-Ann and my grandma at the lake. I remember it was a nice day but also pretty cold.
My first “quad” ride (2008) One summer day while visiting my grandma’s house my uncle came and brought this quad-bike with him. That was a really big surprise. You have to wear a helmet to ride it. The quad has a motor and four wheels. The motor is started by pulling a rope very hard. The quad is not that fast but fast enough to crash. Once I ended up in a ditch which did not make me happy at all. After my second crash I was fed up with it because I had landed in a thorny bush and that was painful. I have not ridden the quad since.
The best dog ever (2009) This is the first dog we ever had. His name was “Astro” and he was a shepherd-collie mix. When I was born, Astro already lived at our house. He was from the animal shelter and became part of our family in 1997 when he was just a puppy. As a puppy Astro only weighed 6 lbs but as a grown dog he weighed over 100 lbs so he was a big dog. He had very soft and fluffy fur. Astro passed away in 2009 which made our entire family very sad. We have several pictures of Astro and I but this is my favorite.
High Speed Train Travel 2010 This is another favorite “thing” of mine. I really like trains, especially high speed ones. In this photo I am standing at the railway station in Munich/Germany. The train shown is an “I C E” which stands for “Intercity Express”. It can travel at speeds of up to 200 mph. It is actually kind of hard to look outside because when the train runs at full speed everything outside looks blurry. The train has a dining car and I like having lunch there with my grandma and my brother. The food is not too bad and it is kind of fun to eat while riding the train.
My favorite Truck in 2011 This is a photo of me standing next to my very favorite truck. It is a 2011 Mercedes Benz “Actros” truck. My uncle Roland works in semi truck sales and he one day surprised me by bringing this huge truck to my grandmas house. The Actros has a cabin that sleeps two people in a bunk bed. One of the best things about this truck is that it has a blue interior light when the engine is running at night. It is like a blue glow in the cabin and that looks really cool. Roland took us for a drive and I think it was one of the best days I ever had in my entire life.
Blue Brothers 2012 This photo shows my brother Tim and I on the morning of my Dad’s birthday in January. We had to get up very early since he had to leave to the airport to go on a business trip. We ate cake at 04.00 A.M. in the morning; this is the earliest I have ever eaten cake. The cake had blue icing and it shows. My mom took this picture of us. Blue is my favorite color and it was funny to have a blue tongue, blue teeth and blue braces. The color unfortunately did not last all day but I enjoyed it while it lasted. I really did not feel blue at all, just the opposite.
