FC: How to Read Literature like a Professor

 Dedicated to: Mrs. Payseur

Nice to Eat You: Acts of Vampires | Everyone thinks that Vampires are just scary and suck people's blood. It's more than something sucking some innocent person's blood. Vampires look for beautiful unmarried men or women. If you really think about it vampires are nasty old men. They prey on beautiful young women and violate and leave their mark on them. When the author talks about vampires he could be using them to show lust, seduction, temptation and even selfishness. When a vampire bites an innocent human they take away all the humans innocence.

Writers use Shakespeare because it is popular and is known by everyone. In his plays there are certain themes. In them play Othello the theme is jealousy. This theme among Shakespeare's other themes are repeated in almost every book and movie in the world. In almost every movie their is a hero and someone protecting or searching for revenge. | When in Doubt, It's Shakespeare.....

...Or the Bible | In away writers use the bible the same way. They expect everyone to know the main bible stories. Like the story of Adam and Eve which shows temptation and guilt. These stories have different symbols also. This includes the apple and serpent. The flood and God's promise that there would never be another flood. God used a rainbow to seal his promise to man. This symbol his used in books and movies to show the end of something or a promise.

It's More Than Just Rain or Snow | An author uses rain to show life or the rebirth of something. They can also use rain to show fear of drowning or give a feeling of being depressed. This can help you see that the character may be sad or depressed. Rain is pure and can show purification or it can show the opposite. Rain can also be destructive because it cause many illnesses. Snow can be used to show the bleak felling of winter. The winter is filled with snow and the death of nature. In another sense snow can be used to show purity and a playful side.

It's All About Sex... | Authors sometimes use symbols to describe Romance instead of actual physical details. They may talk about tunnels, the Holy Grail, and even bowls to describe women. They use tall buildings and even blades to symbolize men. Authors used this technique because the censorship rules that were in place at the time. Sometimes these examples can even be more intense.

...Except Sex | When authors talk about sex or use symbols to depict sex they probably are talking about something other than sex. Using Romeo and Juliet for example. Juliet had to sacrifice herself to be with Romeo. Sex can be used to shows submission for example Shades of Grey.

Symbols in the bible are used everywhere you look. God sacrificed himself for man. Some authors use the crucifixion in there books to describe or intensify the story. They may even show humility, and the fact God was so forgiving. They even talk about fighting with the devil. You should put away your believes while reading a book. Using Christ makes feeling and depiction seem more intense. | Yes, She's a Christ Figure, Too

Hanseldee and Gretedum | Very tails in my opinion have been over used. Even if the story is not a fairy tail they same themes and plots are use in many movies. Cinderella is a perfect example. An innocent orphan is abused by her adopted family and is saved. Snow White can also be used as an example of evil bringing death onto an innocent women and is saved by a prince. This story shows jealously and the effects it has on people. In almost every fairy tale the main character is saved by magical powers or a prince. There is always a certain amount of maturing and good overcoming evil.

...So Does Season | Every season can symbolize a different part of your life. Spring can represent your birth and Summer can represent your childhood. Fall represents middle age and the changing of your life. Winter can even represent your death because the loss of all the leaves. Spring brings flowers and the part of the year to rebirth nature. It brings life and growth to things. Fall is a time to reap what you sow and can result in many rewards. Summer is a playful time where everyone is happy. Summer can also be miserable and can be the harshest time of the year. Winter is harsh and brings a lot of death and the lack of growth makes it very depressing.

Don't Read with Your Eyes | When you begin to read a book don't have a fixed position and don't think of the world in the present tense think of how it would have been when the book was written. Put yourself in a place that can identify with the character during the time the book was written. Although you might have to put yourself inn another person's cultural, social, or personal background you don't have to agree with their views.
