FC: A Moment in Time: | The events of Pearl Harbor, 1941 | Created by: Cristen McCarroll

1: The war was raging in Europe and the tension between America and Japan was building. So, the Pacific Fleet became permanently located at Pearl Harbor in February of 1941. The US had ceased oil exports to the island of Japan due to Japans aggression in the East. Japan felt a surprise attack on the US at Pearl Harbor would help seize control of European controlled colonies in South East Asia. Japan got to work and began training pilots, equipment attained, and intelligence was gathered- under the watchful eye of Admiral Yamomoto. The US believed that the Japanese air fleet they were picking up on radar was a fleet of bombers scheduled to come in that morning....a mistake that would change the course of the war and a nation. | Pearl Harbor before the attack: | Japanese Plane | Admiral Yamomoto

2: "A day that will live in Infamy" | President Franklin Delano Roosevelt | On Dec 7, 1941 353 Japanese planes attacked Pearl Harbor in two waves from six aircraft carriers destroying the US Pacific Fleet: 2,402 Americans were killed and 1,282 wounded. America was shocked and fueled with anger many said Japan

3: Japan launched their attacked on pearl harbor in two waves just 45 minutes apart. The attack started at 7:55am and all ending at 9:45 am. First Wave: target was battleships, aircraft carrier, ford and wheeler island. Second Wave: target was the hangers/ aircraft at Hickam Field.

5: The Damage: All 8 battleships were damaged with 4 being sunk. Three cruisers were sunk/damaged, three destroyers, and an anit-air craft carrier unit. Plus, Hickam field was destroyed along with the hangers and panes. | USS Arizona: exploded, 1,177 killed | USS West Virgina: sank/ risen | Hickman Field: destroyed 189 killed

6: When the smoke cleared... The US was no longer neutral in the war but an active participant in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters. The US ended the war in the Pacific and with Japan with the drop of the Atomic Bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki on Aug 6, 1945.

7: The Pearl Harbor memorial was dedicated in 1962, to honor those lives lost during the attack on pearl harbor. The bridge, which is only accessible by boat, is situated over the sunken hull of the USS Arizona. | Remembrance...

9: Our trip has been amazing!! The locals are as warm and nice as expected. We've been able to visit all of the places on my list and I got to hold a Koala Bear! Woohoo!! Now I can check that off the bucket list. I love it so much here it’s going to be hard to leave, but the fun isn't over yet...we still have 5 more days to explore beautiful Australia.

12: BONDI BEACH is one of Australia's most famous beaches and among the world's most well-known beaches. The beach is roughly a kilometer long and is located on the east coast of Australia and is a suburb of the city of Sydney.

14: THE SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE is a multi-venue performing arts centre in the Australian city of Sydney. It was conceived and largely built by Danish architect Jrn Utzon, finally opening in 1973 after a long gestation starting with his competition-winning design in 1957.
