FC: A Life Affected | A Life Affected | Ryan Collison

"Life, if well lived, is long enough." | Lucius Annaeus Seneca

Table of Contents: | Pages 1-2: Symbols | Pages 3-4: Values/Norms | Pages 5-6: Material Culture/Technology | Pages 7-8: Family Representation | Social norms: The explicit or implicit rules specifying what behaviors are acceptable within a society or group. | Symbols: Cultural representations of reality. | Material culture: The physical objects, resources, and spaces that people use to define their culture.

The recognizable Honda "H" logo, for me, stands for a great deal more than just the world's #1 engine manufacturer. I have spent my life driving old cars, full of quirks, but possess some kind of odd charm; an adequate description of our family. Honda Civics or Accords are generally fuel efficient. This is an attestation of my family's all too important ideals of thrift. | (Above) Our 1985 Honda Accord (fondly named "Sandy") (Near left) Basilica of St. Mary Minneapolis, MN | Symbols

I could not dwell long thinking about my family without the image of the library coming to mind. At any given time we have approximately 40-70 items checked out from various libraries. The library is a place of vast information to be gleaned, and that is how my entire family sees it. | I have been raised in a family set firm in the belief that Jesus is our risen Lord. I also have, slowly but surly, have come to realize just what that entails. In addition, my father is an ordained pastor in the Evangelical Free denomination. I cannot adequately explain the importance of Jesus' teachings both in my life. | Symbols

Service | Art for people's sake | Value/Norms | I serve because I have been served. Serving others is has rewards beyond the readily apparent. I have always had practically serving people modeled by parents, adults, and friends. What a blessing indeed it is to pour into someone's life because they are, in effect, pouring into yours. | Museums, galleries, books, classes, I have been encouraged and explored the mystical call to creating art in its many different forms.

Learning | Values/Norms | Not only did my parents undertake the immense task of homeschooling me and my three other siblings, they instilled in us the insatiable desire to learn. That knowledge is something to be perused, not merely something that is handed to students between kindergarten through college. | (Above) Our living room (Far left) I-44 St. Louis, MO (Near Left) Mural painting at New City Fellowship St. Louis, MO

There is not a time in my life that I my father was not dragging me along to blues gigs, jazz concerts, orchestral performances, or student recitals. Music has been a great definer in my life. It has brought my family closer, I have shared the stage with nearly all my musical family members. It is one of the few things that crosses the barriers of language, ethnicity, socio-economic status. It is mysterious and beautiful. | Material Culture/Technology | (Above left) Downtown Cincinnati, OH (Directly above) Jazz at the Trout Art Museum Appleton, WI

My camera is one of my greatest companions. All the photos you see were taken by my less than trusty Olympus E-510. It has connected me with people and places in an extremely unique and often times unexplainable way. | Material Culture/Technology

Family Representation | The Cajon: a box, a percussion instrument, a barrier breaker. My father and I heard about these unique instruments and I had the epiphany that we could build them. Since then we have begun a small business called Out of the Drawer Percussion. We have sold them in several states. We have built them with high schoolers and third graders, alike. They are simple and can bring out the musician in nearly everyone.

Family Representation | What an interesting call the motorcycle has. At the heart, a motor and two wheels. If one has the right bike or rides it just right, it is a pass, a card into a club. I know that I am not in the club yet, but I am most addicted to the speed and agility, of a motorcycle. An absurd invention, indeed.
