FC: Rutherford B. Hayes 19th President of the United States. "My policy is trust—peace, and to put aside the bayonet."

1: Born on October 4,1822 in Delaware, Ohio, two months after his father death. Attended school at Delaware and Norwalk, Ohio and Middletown, Connecticut. | Graduated for Kenyon College, Gambier, Ohio. He entered Harvard Law School and received his degree in 1845. Left in 1849 for Cincinnati, where he became a successful lawyer. In 1852, Rutherford married Lucy Ware Webb of Chillicothe. When Civil War began, Hayes offered his services to the state of Ohio.

2: Hayes promptly made goods on the secrets pledges made during the electoral dispute. He withdraw federal troops for states still under military occupation, thus ending the era of Reconstruction. Hayes refused renomination by the Republican Party in 1880, contenting himself with one term as president.

3: His promise not to interfere with elections in the former Confederacy ensured a return there of traditional white Democratic supremacy. Hayes appointed Southerners to federal positions, and he made financial appropriations for Southern improvements. In 1879 Hayes signed an act permitting women lawyers to practice before the Supreme Court. In retirement he devoted himself to humanitarian causes, notably prison reform and educational opportunities for Southern black youth

4: The daughter of a Chillicothe physician, Lucy was a recent graduate of Cincinnati Wesleyan Women's College. She and Rutherford courted for two years before marrying in Cincinnati on Dec. 30, 1852. Their first child, Birchard Austin, was born November 4, 1853. Birchard became a prominent attorney in Toledo, Ohio. He died there January 24, 1926. Webb Cook Hayes was born March 20, 1856, in Cincinnati, a career military man. He died July 26, 1934, in Marion, Ohio. Rutherford Platt Hayes was born June 24, 1858, in Cincinnati.

5: He died July 31, 1927, in Tampa, Florida. Joseph Thompson Hayes was born Dec. 21, 1861, in Cincinnati. His brief life came to an end June 24, 1863, Born September 29, 1864, in Cincinnati, George Crook Hayesthree Hayes children to die in infancy - on May 24, 1866, in Cincinnati. Fanny Hayes was born September 2, 1867, in Cincinnati,Fanny died March 19, 1950, in Lewiston, Maine.
