FC: Sir Edmund Hillary's Life
1: Sir Edmund Hillary was born July 20th 1919 in Auckland. His family moved to Tuakau when his father who fought at Gallipoli was awarded land. His school days were spent at Tuakau Primary and Auckland Grammar. | The journey from Tuakau to Auckland Grammar took 2 hours!
2: When he was 16 he went on a school trip to Mount Ruapehu. This sparked his interest in Mountain Climbing.
3: When he left school he followed in his father's footsteps and became a bee keeper. But mountaineering was soon going to become his life's ambition.
4: In 1939 he completed his first major climb. He reached the summit of Mount Ollivier near Mount Cook in the Southern Alps of New Zealand.
5: He joined the airforce in 1943. He was burnt in an accident in 1945. In 1947 he climbed Mount Cook in New Zealand.
6: In 1949 Hillary travelled to Europe and climbed in the Austrian and Swiss Alps.
7: In May 29 1953 Hillary along with Tenzing Norgay conquered Everest
8: In July 16 he was given a Knighthood for his achievements. Later that year September the 3rd he married Lousie Mary Rose.
9: In 1955 Hillary published the first of many books 'High Adventure' and in 1956 'East of Everest'
10: In 1958 Hillary led a team to the South Pole. On Fergusson tractors Sir Ed and his team drove overland to the South Pole. They became the first men to reach the pole since Robert Falcon Scott.
11: In 1961 Hillary started a lifetime of charity work building a school for the children of Khumjung.
