Slave Trade - Page Text Content

Slavery in Africa was first used as punishment. Later as slave trade and the need for slaves spread many traders decided to start kidnapping the Africans and selling them to different families there. They would put sacks over their heads and put rags tied around their mouths, and hands tied behind their backs. Even thought the capture seems brutal in Africa the slave owners treated their slaves with respect.

Compared to salve trade in Africa, the salve trade trade in America and treatment of them was much worse. They would tie their arms and legs and necks in chains connected to the next slave. Also if they did not obey they would whip them. Their living space in the ship was very crowed, unsanitary, and the air was unhealthy to breath in.

The trip that the ships were taking was the Middle Passage and part of the triangular trade route where the slaves were to go from Africa and shipped and be traded in America. The Triangular Trade route started and ended in Europe. The Middle Passage was the second leg of the triangle. When they arrived there, the ship would be loaded with goods made from America and would be shipped back to Europe.

After they went from the West Indies to America, the people there would pick slaves like they were picking animals .Most slaves worked as plantation farmers on their owner's land. In America, later they were allowed to work and pay for their freedom.
