1: Steamboats made up river travel easier. Before steamboats people had to row. Rowing was difficult and tiring. Steamboats didn't require as large a crew. They could run without resting. They could be larger. They could carry more people .

2: Steamboats made trips faster. They made trade routes by river profitable. They allowed more goods to be transported. They made transportation cheaper.

3: The Steamboat was the first “powered” boat. It paved the way for steam liners like Titanic (bad example ;P). Boats with combustion engines have made this design only feasible in large scale transport vessels. Boats have aslo become larger. Steamboats are still used and are still being improved on.
