Imperialism, the meaning | Imperialism: The policy/practice of gaining territory for the use of raw materials and access new markets around the world.

S | SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR | The Spanish-American War was an important part of US history because of the effect it had on imperialism in the United States of America. America obtained the Philippines, Guam, and Puerto Rico. The was started because of yellow journalism, US sugar interest, and the explosion of the U.S.S. Maine.

 Yellow Journalism

Yellow Journalism | Yellow Journalism is a type of journalism with a large amount of exaggeration of news events without legitimate facts supporting their claim. This was used during the Spanish-American War especially when the U.S.S. Maine exploded.

Panama Canal | The Panama Canal connects the Atlantic and Pacific ocean and is key to international trade. The US wanted it because it would make it alot easier to trade with other countries without having to sail around the tip of South America. The Panama Canal was a man made canal and construction was finished January 7th, 1914.

Open Door Policy | The open door policy was used in foreign affairs around the 1900's that allowed multiple imperial powers to have access to China, even though they had no control over that country. It was announced by the secretary of state John Hay, even though the policy called for the free movement of goods but it didnt call for the free movement of people.

Boxer Rebellion | The Boxer Rebellion was simply a reaction to Western trade, Imperialism, and economic development in China around the 1900's. Thousands of Chinese Christians were killed by Boxers(Righteous and Harmonious Society Movement). It eventually ended in the Boxer Protocol which lead to the execution of ten high ranking leaders who supported the rebellion.

Roosevelt vs. Taft | The main difference between Roosevelt and Taft foreign policy was the fact that Roosevelt carried a big stick while Taft tried to accomplish a lot with little noise surrounding him. Roosevelt would crack down on foreign policy while Taft would be more laid back about it. Taft lacked Roosevelt's strength of personality and was more passive in his dealings with congress. Even though their foreign policies were different, the fact that they were both involved in foreign affairs made them similar.

Success of Imperialism | Imperialism was successful because it increase the USA's economic power even more. If it wasn't for Imperialism the US wouldn't have acquired territories such as Alaska, Guam, The Philippines, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico. We also wouldn't have access to raw materials and new markets around the world. It also makes us more friendly with other countries when we trade with them.
