2: Values | Family is the most important unit in the Amish lifestyle. Families with 7-10 children are common. Chores are divided by sexual role. | Honesty is a huge value for the Amish. Children are taught early to never lie because it is a sin and God knows everything they do. | The Amish value simplicity over comfort and convenience. Their lifestyle is a way of maintaining self-sufficiency.

3: Norms | Forbidden from using electricity, telephones, central heating, automobiles, and tractors with pneumatic tires. | Forbidding education beyond the elementary grades. (8th grade) | Amish clothing is all homemade. Women are required to wear long dresses and are forbidden to cut their hair. Men wear suits and coats with trousers. Married men are required to grow a beard.

4: Symbols | Horse & Buggy- only way for the Amish to travel around away from home. | Lanterns- signify their way of light due to the fact that they do not believe in the use of electricity. | Religion- have church every other week, hosted at a different family's house each time. Very important in Amish culture!

5: Language | English- Amish primarily use the English language when writing letters (with occasional German) or when non-Amish people are within a range where they can hear them. | Pennsylvania German or "Dutch"- Amish primarily use this language when communicating with other Amish people. This language has many similarities to the German dialect spoken today, but it includes many English words. | "Swiss Amish"- A language invented by the "Swiss Amish", primarily found in Indiana. This dialect differs from the Pennsylvania German and sometimes it is hard for the Amishmen to communicate.

6: Material Items | Amish clothing is all hand-made. While the men are off working on the farms, the women are working hard to make the clothing. | The Amish depend on farming to grow their own food. Their farms and farming equipment is essential to their success. Farming is the main source of income for families.

7: Demographics | - Christian religious group - Swiss Anabaptists (Mennonites) - Alsace Anabaptists (more strict) - New group is known as Amish

8: Where are the Amish prevalent? | -About 70% of U.S. Amish live in three states: Ohio, Pennsylvania and Indiana. | 1. Holmes/Wayne County, Ohio Settlement 2. Lancaster County, Pennsylvania 3. Elkhart/LaGrange County, Indiana | -Located in about 27 states in the United States. | -10,250 Amish people are located in Wisconsin alone, the 4th largest population in the United States.

9: How long has the Amish culture been around? | 1525- Amish culture is derived from the Mennonites or Anabaptists. 1693- Broke off from the Swiss Mennonites in Europe and became known as the "Old Order Amish". 1727- The first Amish families migrated to America and settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. 1737- Emigration of Amish to America begins in significant amounts.

10: Leaders: | Jakob Ammann | -Issues between Jakob Ammann and Swiss Mennonite leaders caused him to break off from the group and form a new group of people which eventually became known as the "Amish" culture we know today. | 1656-1730 Founder of the Amish in 1693

11: Interesting Facts | -Amish men are never allowed to grow a moustache because they believe that represents the "military look" and the Amish are complete pacifists. -Prior to being married, men are required to have a clean shaven face, however, after they get married they are required to let their beard grow. -The Amish do not draw social security, join the Army, or allow any form of assistance from the government but are still required to pay property taxes. - The Amish are affected by various heritable genetic disorders, which are largely due to the combination of the small population of Amish and the risk of inbreeding. -Many Amish babies are born at home with a midwife present, however, there are no baby showers or celebrations. -The Ordnung is a set of rules that the Amish choose to live by in order to achieve organization within their group.
