FC: This book is one of the most stirring and sensational books of the 1900s. For its time, it was riveting; showing woman in a new and unique light. It helped to break the gilded cage of society, allowing woman to be seen as free-thinking individuals. The Awakening, is often praised as the first prose-feminist book in the America, making it an instant classic.

1: Chopin was forty-eight when she wrote about Edna Pontellier and her awakening.

2: In the novel, water is a key symbol. . | It is used to show the washing a way of negativity and the cleansing and renewing of one's self.

3: Birds are also, a strong symbol in the novel. Edna relates to them. | She sees herself, like them, caged and unable to fly. But throughout the awakening, she is slowly opening her wings and taking flight.
