4: Main Characters - Celie: protagonist, narrator, harsh upbringing in the South, tough family relations, writes letters to God, southern diction - Nettie: Celie's sister, abusive relationships, goes to Africa, takes care of kids, involved with Alphonso and Mr., sensitive personality - Shug (Lillie) Avery: attractive woman involved with three characters (Celie, Grady, and Mr.), gives advice to others - Mr: very abusive, possibly the antagonist of the story, Celie's husband, loose relationships with women - Sofia: strong headed woman, in charge, imprisoned, married to Harpo but leaves him - Harpo: Mr's oldest son, falls in love with Squeak - Samuel and Corrine adopted Olivia and Adam - Alphonso: Celie's stepfather, father to Olivia and Adam *There are several other characters that do not greatly advance the plot*

5: Nettie's Alive! | - Celie finally saw Nettie's letters that Mr. had been hiding. - Celie is anxious to see Nettie, Adam, Samuel, Corrine, and Olivia. - The characters are traveling back to Georgia from a village named Olinka. - Celie and Nettie try and "catch up" through more letters.

6: The importance of God in The Color Purple | Dear God... | " I have always been a good girl. Maybe you can give me a sign letting me know what is happening to me." - pg.1 "I will write more when things start looking up. I trust God they will." - pg 171

7: Basic Information: Setting - Georgia and Africa, weather descriptions used to set mood, seasons, difference in sisters' locations Conflict: Abusive relationships, family issues, affairs, and racism issues are probably the most prevalent of the conflicts introduced. The solutions included support from friends and God. Main Plot Points: - The story is conveyed through first person (Celie)journal entries to primarily God. - The majority of the female characters have issues with their families/significant others - Concepts mentioned: cheating, sex, marriage, lying, abuse race issues, responsibilities, wealth, and traveling - Throughout the course of the book, characters change their values and view on life completely which makes for an interesting turn of events. - Relationship portrayed between two sisters across the world from one another. - The characters find themselves reflecting on past experiences. - The book has a happy ending!

8: Connections to The Great Gatsby | - Same time period (Early 20th century) - Written in first person through a narrator (Celie and Nick) - The authors use setting and geography to further the reader's understanding of the book. - Family and friends are a crucial aspect to all the characters, especially the protagonists. - Cheating was very prevalent in both books; Relationship issues - Location (USA) - Mention of the idea of repeating the past - Both books were turned into movies afterwards.
