FC: The Great Lake States By Melissa Raff

1: Water sports are a part of life in the Great Lakes Region...winter, spring, summer, and fall!

2: The Great Lake States include Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. All of these states have shorelines on one or more of the five Great Lakes.

3: The Great Lakes can be remembered by the word HOMES. Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, and Superior.

4: The Great Lakes were glacier formed. It is because of the glaciers that a variety of landforms can be found in the region.

5: Common landforms include moraines, kettles, valleys, rivers, lakes, mountains, sandy beaches, and washout plains.

6: History

7: Before the arrival of the French missionaries, the region was ruled by many Native tribes. | Explorers came down from Quebec, Canada in the early 1600's. Jean Nicolet is the first European to touch Wisconsin's soil in 1634. He believed he was in China.

8: Important Historical Events: | Important Historical Figures:

10: Economy Because the region is surrounded by water, and has linked waterways to the Mississippi River and the Atlantic Ocean, shipping is a major industry in the area. Manufacturing is another important part of the economy. Many rich forests mean that wood and wood products are a major industry. Paper, paper products, lumber, pulp, furniture, and the like are all produced here.
