FC: The History of Digital Imaging | By: Kimberly Kant & Myrna Garcia

Through the efforts of many scientists, digital imaging has evolved from just a few pixels which created a grainy radiographic image to electronic images that can be easily viewed, manipulated, and transmitted via the internet. This technology has greatly advanced the field of Radiologic Imaging.

The first generation of teleradiology began with Dr Albert Jutras' cable-mediated teleradiology program in Montreal, Canada | 1950's

Today, gateways securely send diagnostic images from the DICOM modalities and digitized film to designated off-site radiologists and other service providers using telecommunication infrastructure, usually the internet.

Godfrey Hounsfield | Implemented and was the first to use a CT scanner | 1970's

Allan Cormack | Shared the 1979 Nobel Prize with Godfrey Hounsfield for their work on the invention of the CT scanner.

First CT scanners only imaged the head | developed by Siemens

Axial CT image of a normal brain using a state-of-the-art CT system and a 512x512 matrix image | Original axial CT image from the dedicated Siretom CT scanner circa 1975

shared the nobel prize with Peter Mansfield in 2003 | Paul Christian Lauterbur | MRI

Sir Peter Mansfield | First to step inside the original whole body scanner

PACS | Development of PACS began in early to mid 1980's. These early PACS systems had little standardization in image formats

DICOM | The establishment of DICOM allowed imaging modalities and PACS to communicate in the same language

Early PACS was developed by US Military to move images from VA Hospitals and battlefield images to established hospitals

The first full scale PACS installed at the VA Medical Center in 1993

Computed Radiography | introduced commercially in the US in 1983

Digital Radiography | uses x-ray absorbing material or Charged Coupled Device to form images.
