Setting The setting takes place on the coastal shores in La Paz, a small village of brush houses filled with poor people I guess I would call them. Takes place in the mid 1940s.

Kino Kino, is a misunderstood man with a strong heart. Throughout the book, you will find Kino as a very risky man, but he doesn't give up on what he thinks or believes in.

 Kino

Juana Juana is a very unique, and strong character. Juana is the type of person that doesn't give up, She is the lover of Kino and mother of Coyotito. She is very protective of Coyotito. She does as she is told from Kino. Juana is an amazing character and if I could meet her in the real life, I would.

Chapter1 Summary Coyotito ( Kino and Juana's baby ) was stung by a scorpion. The sting caused the baby's swelling and illnesses. The family decides to have a doctor to examine and cure Coyotito's wound. Out of racism toward Kino's kind and through greedyness, the doctor will not tend to the baby's hurt. Though the baby was not killed, he had to suffer extreme pain until their family could cure him.

Chapter 2 Summary In this chapter, Kino and Juana must find a cure for Coyotito. They decide to go pearl searching. While out over the water, as Juana uses a type of seaweed for a poultice toward Coyotito;s wound, Kino is looking for a pearl. Just out of luck he does find the pearl and in not physical or mental way, Coyotito's wound is healed.

Chapter 3 Summary In this chapter, a lot of interesting things occur. While the baby's wound is healing at a fast rate, the doctor hears news that the family finds a pearl which values at a high price. The doctor insists on seeing the baby as his patient and knowing he is recovering very fast, the doctor 'tricks' the family in to thinking he is very ill and makes it seem as he cured the baby, just so he would be rewarded, or paid. Not much later Kino is attacked, showing that this pearl is very valuable to a lot of people. This all started to occur after the pearl was found.

Chapter 4 Summary Now, Kino has many beliefs of what this pearl will do if they do sell it, as if just magic happened. Kino and his family followed by his whole village travel to the town near their home. After entering the town, they find buyers for the pearl. They pearl buyers knew about this, so try and cozened, or trick, Kino into selling the pearl for a low price. Brilliantly, Kino does not fall into the plan and leaves. Now Juana wants to get rid of the pearl because she believes it has brought ' bad luck ' to the family.

Chapter 5 Summary Now, that after what all has occurred, it is time for the family to go to the capital and sell the pearl there. But before this, Juana tries to throw the pearl back, but Kino stops he, and beats her and is then attacked by some random character. After killing the man, his huts are burned. Moments later him and his family leave to the capital.

Chapter 6 Summary In the last chapter of this book, the family move on to the capital. Thinking they will sell the pearl successfully, they are followed but the followers cannot find them. They are trying to track and kill them. Kino decides to run up a mountain in a cave, thinking they are safe the trackers are near. Kino decides to attack and hope to succeed. By mistake Coyotito ( the baby ) is killed and later on the pearl is thrown back into the sea.

Coyotito Coyotito is the son of Juana and Kino. He is completely defenseless. The baby does become ill and later dies. Nothing else to say.

The Doctor! I don't like the doctor in this book, but yet I do. In the book he's not a good person, he's very greedy, fat, lazy and just a horrible person, but if it weren't for him this book wouldn't be. He's an enemy to Kino's race and treats them like animals. He's not a good person, but he's what makes this book exciting.

Theme The theme of this story is almost basically a goal. As a poor helpless family try to sell a pearl that's value is extremely high, they face complication. As many encounters enter and try to destroy them, Kino himself is destroying his family due to the desire of selling the pearl.
