1: Project by Courtney Phillips Mrs. Crew 4th period November 2nd, 2010

2: John Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California, in 1902. He grew up in an agricultural valley close to the coast. Both settings are in some of his best fictions. Steinbeck went to Stanford University for 7 years and left without taking a degree. He wrote a total of 27 books, in his lifetime. in 1962, he received the Nobel Prize for Literature. Steinbeck acomplished many things in his life right up until his death in 1968.

3: La Paz means Our Lady of Peace in English. It was founded in 1548. | Kino lived in the brush houses on the beach, but the doctor lived in the big houses covered in bougainvillea.

4: Kino Father of Coyotito and "husband" of Juana.

6: Coyotito Son of Juana and Kino

7: The Doctor Lives in the city in the big houses and refuses to care for people from stick houses

8: In this chapter, Coyotito was stung by the scorpion. They went to the doctor for help but the doctor refused to see them. They even tried to pay him. Kino was angry when he left and he hit the door to the doctor's house. | Chapter 1

9: Chapter 2 | In this chapter, they go out in the boat to find a pearl to pay for the doctor. They found the pearl of the world, and the seaweed poulitce on Coyotito's arm worked.

10: Chapter 3 | Everyone found out about the pearl. They were going to sell the pearl to get money but many of the people in the city tried to take advantage of Kino because they wanted some of the money from the pearl. Juana tried to tell Kino that the pearl would only bring evil.

11: Chapter 4 | Kino was going to sell the pearl to the pearl buyers and Juan Thomas told him to be sure to not get tricked. The pearl buyers tired to trick him and he snatched up his pearl and told them he was going to the big city.

12: Chapter 5 | The trackers were attacking Kino for the pearl. They burnt down his house and ruined his boat. They had no place to go so they ran on foot. They ran on the outskirts of town trying not to be found.

13: Chapter 6 | They ran up the mountains and they know they are being tracked. The trackers found them and shot at them and Coyotito was hit. He died. After that, Kino and Juana returned to their burnt down home and trew the pearl back.

14: Theme | The theme of this story is that things cant bring you happiness they only bring bad things into your life.
