He lived in New York for awhile before he became a writer. One of his worst failures was dropping out of Stanford University in 1925. John married his first wife in 1930. They lived in Pacific Grove, California in his father's cottage home. His first successful novel was Tortilla Flat, which was written in 1935. He divorced his first wife in 1943 and married his second wife. Then he divorced her five years later. In 1950, he married his third wife. They stayed together until his death on December 20, 1968. He died from congestive heart failure and heart disease because of his long life of smoking.

La Paz, Mexico is filled with plastered and stoned buildings. There is one church and bougainvillaea grows on a lot of the buildings. There is only one church. If something special happens, everyone is there to see it.

 La Paz, Mexico

"Father of Coyotito and husband of Juana" Kino was a Mexican Indian and pearl diver. He lived with his wife and son in a hut on the outskirts of La Paz, Mexico. One day when he was searching for pearls in the ocean, he came upon the big pearl that he had ever seen. It did not take him long before he became obsessed with the pearl, along with everyone else in the town. He lost his home and his baby son.

"Wife of Kino and mother of Coyotito" Juana was also a Mexican Indian, and she lived with Kino and Coyotito in a hut located on a beach outside of La Paz, Mexico. It was her duty to do whatever Kino asked her to do, and she strongly supported him in his quest to find a pearl that would change their lives forever. She had been thinking about things she would want if they were to become rich, but after awhile she realized that the pearl was not worth keeping. She lost her son and her home because of it.

"Son of Kino and Juana" Coyotito was the center of Juana's and Kino's lives. He was very young and innocent whenever he was stung by the scorpion. His parents tried to get medical help, but the doctor refused to treat him until he found out about the pearl. Coyotito met his fate in a cave in the mountains. His family was being tracked, and his dad tried to keep him and his mom safe by going after the trackers. One of them thought he heard a coyote and shot Coyotito's head off.

"Unfair doctor and racist against Indians" The doctor was a very wealthy and sly American man. He considered the Indians to be "animals", and refused to treat Coyotito whenever the scorpion stung him. The doctor lives in a big house with a garden and a large gate entrance. He changed his mind about helping Coyotito when he heard that Kino had found a giant pearl, and he wanted the money from it.
