2: John Steinbeck | John was born in California in 1902. He wrote a total of 27 books. In 1962, he received the noble prize for literature. He married his first wife, Carol Henning, in 1930. He married and divorced quite a few times. He died in New York City on December 20, 1968.
4: Kino and his family live in a brush house outside of the city. He lives outside of the city La Piz, Mexico. They are near sea. Kino is considered for not being wealthy because of being Indian. The story is possibly in the late nineteenth or early twentieth century. | Setting

10: Chapter 1 | We are introduces to many of the main characters in this chapter. Kino is "married" to Juana. Their infant son, Coyotito, gets bitten by a scorpion. They live in brush houses. Kino and Juana go to see the doctor in the city to treat Coyoitio. The doctor considers them "little Indians" and calls them animals. In this chapter we are introduced to the setting of the story, and we learn many traits about the characters.
11: Chapter 2 | The family goes in the canoe that was given to Kino from his grandfather. KIno is going to sea to search for pearls. Juana prays to find a pearl, so they are able to afford the doctor. Kino found "the pearl of the world". They knew their life would never be the same from here on.
12: Chapter 3 | Everyone finds out about the pearl very quickly. Once hearing about the pearl, the doctor comes to treat Coyotito and ask when Kino will be able to pay him. The evil feelings in Kino start to occur. Juana wants to get rid of the pearl from the start. She feels it will destroy them,even her son. Kino wants to keep the pearl, because he sees a plan for the future.
13: Chapter 4 | KIno plans to visit the pearl buyers and sell his pearl. The whole town is anxious for this day. Kino has many plans for what he will do with his wealth. His life will be changed after this day. The pearl buyers say the pearl is worthless. They believe the pearl is abnormally large and must be fake. Kino reacts very angrily. He plans to go to the capital to sell his pearl and get the money he deserves. Kino is attacked outside of his house. He keeps getting a feeling of evil.
14: Chapter 5 | Juana tries to take the pearl and leave. Kino hers her and is able to get the pearl from her. On his way to the beach, Kino gets attacked. After, he notices someone put a hole in his canoe. Later, he sees his house being burned down. Juan Thomas hides them in his house for the night. Most neighbors assume the family dies in the fire. Kino pland to travel north at dark.
15: Chapter 6 | The family begins their travel north. They walk all night. Three trackers follow the family. Kino believes they may be able to lose the trackers in the mountains. Kino tries to mislead the trackers in many occasions. Kino is able to see the three trackers from the cave they hide in. He notices one trackers awake with a gun. The other two are sleeping. Kino decides to attack the trackers. Coyotito gets shot and decapitates his head. Kino knows the pearl is evil and throws it back in the ocean!
17: A moral taught in this story is wealth doesn't always mean happiness. Kino and his family were much happier before Kino found the pearl. Wealth is not measured with money. You can be happy without wealth.
