4: Early Years Thomas Hart Benton was born in Neosho, Missouri, on April 15, 1889. He was the oldest child. He loved to draw when he was younger, his mother encouraged his drawing while his father did not. | http://shs.umsystem.edu/famousmissourians/artists/benton/kilt.html

5: Benton's father was a successful lawyer and because of his job they moved to Washington D.C. in 1896. The art in the city inspired Benton and he loved seeing the murals at the Library of Congress. 6: Benton wanted to study art in Europe. In 1908 he moved to Paris, France to take art classes. Soon Benton studied on his own trying to find what interested him the most. He soon found that he enjoyed using bright colors to paint people in real places doing real things. | Education

12: Benton wanted to paint regular people doing regular things. He traveled all over America to steel mills, coal mines, and logging camps. He even traveled to the deep South to watch as people picked cotton. | Travel

16: Benton plays a role in Art History | Benton became a leader of a movement called regionalism. He painted what he observed and made ordinary people look like hero's. | He often painted in problems that he thought American people should know about. He would even paint in villains of the time period such as the wealthy.

17: Legacy | Many Americans loved Benton's worked and how he captured the American lifestyle of the 1920's and 1930's | Other Americans found Benton's work to be to outspoken about politics and social problems of the time period.

18: In September of 1935 Benton moved Kansas City, Missouri. He lived there and painted in his studio until his death. On January 19, 1975 Thomas Hart Benton past away in his studio. His art can be seen in many museums, books , and public buildings around the world.
