BC: Happy Reading!!!!!!!
Piedmont There are good places to farm in the Piedmont region. Farmers grow things such as apples, peaches, corn, and wheat. The animals on the farm are important too because the farmers use them to make money when their milk and meat are sold.
Appalachian Plateau The Appalachian Plateau is one of the smallest regions in Virginia. The people live in the rocky areas or the green areas. There are important minerals like coal to be used for electricity here which is important so people can heat their houses.
Blue Ridge The Blue Ridge Mountains is connected to Georgia and Pennsylvania, and it is to the west of Virginia. Farming is important here and animals like hogs, chickens, and cattle are raised in this region. A few fun things to do for kids is a museum and a kids petting zoo.
Coastal Plain The Coastal Plain has beautiful wild ponies and horses that trot around the Chincoteague Island. On the Coastal Plain region, fishermen go out to sea to catch Blue Crabs on a big boat in the Atlantic Ocean. And farmers have good places to farm on the Coastal Plain. If you go to a beach, you can walk right up to the water and it will touch your feet and it will tickle.
Forests A long time ago forests were big and dark, deep green with lots of tall trees. There are not too many left any more but I have gone fishing in the green forest where there is a large pond and lots of large trees, which are protected from being cut down now.
Beaches and Wetlands Without wetlands there would be a lot of flooding in Virginia. When it rains a lot the beaches and swamps hold the water and prevent flooding. Swamps make good homes for all kinds of animals like snakes, birds, deer, and fish.
Caves and Caverns When you go to a cave they feel wet and look dark and slippery. My mom wants to take me to Luray Caverns to see the natural growths inside but I’m not so sure that I want to meet up with the spiders and beetles that live in these caves! If these caves get too old, I’m scared that they will collapse and fall on me!
Freshwater Once with my dad, I went to a river to go swimming, and it was so nice because it was not polluted but when I got in, the water was cold! But some rivers I have seen are dirty and dark, slimy green because of the pollution. This kind of dirty water is not good for animals to drink or plants to grow in.
Minerals We need minerals because it keeps our houses warm, and gives us gas to cook with. Minerals are also used to make jewelry, and sometimes minerals are in foods.
Timber Another natural resource is trees. We need trees to live in, cabins if you are going camping and you need to sleep somewhere and we need trees for paper to write on and wood pencils to write with
Fertilizer We need fertilizer and soil for food to grow in so we can eat. Water is also important so we can grow tomatoes, corn, potatoes, onions and more.
