FC: Drug Abuse

Drug abuse is the use of any drug or medication for a reason other than the one it was intended to serve or in a manner or in quantities other than directed, which can lead to clinically significant impairment or distress. | Drug Abuse.

Drug abuse is an ongoing issue in the United States of America. Over the last 40 years the War of Drugs has been in full effect. In 2008 a little over 1.7 million people were arrested on drug related charges. This was a decline from the nearly 1.85 million in 2007. | DEA-deliverance

According to a 2007 National Survey on Drugs Use and Health, 9.3 million Americans from age 12 and up have admitted to using an illicit drug other than marijuana. | Drug Abuse

The feminist perspective on the dealings with drug abuse is one that states that women, ethnic groups, gay and lesbian populations, and other marginalized groups do not get the same treatment opportunities as the “white male” population. The treatment of women was not any different than that of men. | This ignored the fact that women have needs such as prenatal and gynecologic care. It wasn't until 1989 that the 12-step program was revised with a version to better suite women. Also, treatment centers do not offer child care for those single mothers that are seeking treatment that have no one to take care of their children while they are in treatment. Thus single women with no children are more likely to be able to have access to and finish a treatment plan. It is extremely unfortunate that if you are not the white male in the American society then you more than likely will not get the treatment for your addiction that you deserve. | Cocaine Abuse

Women tend to use drugs are a way of coping with unlined issues such as depression. Without the proper treatment and medical attention this illness is not properly assessed and treated, thus creating a better outcome of the substance abuse recovery. | Depression

Another issue that is related to drug abuse is the abuse and/or neglect of children. When the parents are drug addicted the focus is on the next "hit" not the livelihood of their children. | The children are exposed to the use and abuse of the drug of choice as well of the dangers that come with them. In the altered state of mind that happens with drugs some parents may mentally, physically, emotionally, and sexually abuse their children. Children may not eat for days or end up homeless due to the fact that family income is being spent on the drug habit and not the families needs. | |

Until seeking help for the unlined issues of which one is turning to drugs to deal cope with is more socially acceptable and obtainable the drug abuse issue will never be completely resolved. |
