FC: What Makes a Story? ...Story Elements! Written by Miss Holliday

1: What are Story Elements? Story elements are what make a story complete.There are different components that make up a story. Story elements include: Characters Setting Problem Events Solution

2: Characters Characters are people, animals, or cartoons that are involved in the plot of the story. Characters show actions, traits, emotions, and feelings in a story. Although feelings, traits, and emotions are not always directly stated in the story, you can infer them by noticing what the character says or does.

3: Greedy-Pinkilicious Curious-George Brave-Irene Character traits A character trait tells how the character behaves. A character trait describes what the character says and does. Everyone has character traits, and they do not change very often. Do not confuse character traits with feelings and emotions. Emotions and feelings change, while character traits stay the same.

4: Examples of Character Traits: Actions and/or words Character Trait 1. Curious George kept wondering what the man Curious in the yellow hat was doing. and -He wanted to see what was Nosey in the box, so he opened it and looked. 2. Kobey wanted to learn how to tie his shoe but he kept messing up. He asked Determined his friend to help him He kept and trying, until he finally got it Persistent right. He never gave up!

5: Actions and/or words Character trait 3. Stacey saw that her friend BJ fell off of his bike and scraped his knee so she offered him a Helpful Band-Aid. and She said, “BJ are you ok? Do you Caring Need help getting up?”

6: Here is a list of some character traits: Brave Generous Caring Helpful Clever Lazy Creative Loyal Cruel Mean Curious Persistent Determined Responsible Friendly Rude Funny Trustworthy Untrustworthy

7: Non-Examples of character traits: happy, sad, angry, sleepy, sick. These are feelings and emotions which may change often. They do NOT characterize who you are as a person or a character in a book. Now brainstorm some more examples and non-examples of character traits! See how many you can come up with!

8: Setting The setting of a story tells where and when it takes place. Examples of setting: Beach Playground Forest

9: Store Home in winter | during a storm at a party at night | after breakfast

10: Problem and Solution The problem is a situation that needs to be fixed or solved. The solution tells how the problem was solved. Examples of problem and solution: Problem Solution Broken Pencil Sharpen pencil | Sick go to the doctor

11: Baby's crying feed the baby | Spilled milk clean it up
