FC: You Wouldn't Want To Sail With Sir Francis Drake! | Isabella # 20
Sir Francis Drake wasn’t just a pirate. I should tell you about him. Although he was great at plundering Spanish and Portuguese ships, that wasn’t his life. One day, he brought all his crew on his ship, and they were in for a surprise. Francis Drake was sailing around the world- hoping to follow Magellan’s example. Drake also felt it was important to get spices for the kingdom. Drake thought getting spices for the kingdom was important because everyone wanted spices- and they could sell them. | Sir Francis Drake
Where Would You Get Money To Pay For The Journey? Someone very special decided to help. A dress of gold and jewels, a crown atop her head- You Guessed it- Queen Elizabeth. Francis Drake lived during the Elizabethan age, and from every raid he brought her gold and silver, beautiful silks- she loved him like a son. Elizabeth found a group of people she convinced in 1577 to pay for the voyage. Along the way, he stole from ships like there was no tomorrow - and the Spanish were angry.
Are You Happy To Be Home? “Welcome back, Drake.” said the Queen anxiously. “The land of fire is in fact not a continent, but an archipelago.” he said. “And, I brought so many spices, we barely had room for us!”The Queen’s mouth seemed to water as she received the news. “Yes, good... we did not get the men to pay for nothing- I would of had to pay them back, and good old England already has a huge amount of debt i need to pay..” However, her Friend, Drake, gave her every last bit of gold and silver from Spanish ships. She paid the kingdom’s debt, then rewarded him with a knighthood.
The Spanish told Queen Elizabeth about their anger. Drake had to give everything back. The Queen said no, and the Spanish formed an Armada against England. Drake led the England. The English sent out their small ships- on fire. The Armada ships were loaded with gunpowder, and they scattered- they were scared of their ships catching on fire. Unfortunately, the English attacked ships one by one, and the ones that did not flee- sunk. Before England knew it, they had won the battle of the Spanish Armada, which is forever remembered, still. | What Is Happening?
Drake was a brave man, one of a kind. He sailed around the world, he conquered the Spanish armada. But Most importantly, he was loyal to his queen. His kingdom’s safety was important to him, thus why he fought until the war was over. Drakes power would never be forgotten, but honored, because of his loyalty.
