FC: Young Goodman Brown By Nathanial Hawthorne
Young Goodman Brown is leaving his home when Faith, his wife, asks him to postpone his trip until the morning.
Goodman Brown hesitates, but the trip goes on. Goodman Brown asks if Faith doubts him already after their 3 month marriage. Faith gives him her blessings and he proceeds with his trip.
From a distance he sees Faith watching, she has a sad way about her and he feels sorry for her, noting how pretty she looks in her cute pink bonnet.
Goodman Brown begins his journey into a forest where he encounters an elder man, who appears to be somewhat of a mystery. This mysterious man goes with Goodman Brown further into the dark forest. There is something unsettling and dark about the man is this evil or the Devil he is traveling with?
As their journey continues Goodman Brown sees other familiar and respected town people like the minister and deacon who are going to this meeting also.
He is shocked and saddened and begins to turn around and go back. But then Goodman Brown hears a familiar voice. It is Faith, and he realizes she is being initiated at this meeting. He joins the others at this meeting as originally planned.
This meeting was more like a ceremony, deep in the darkness of the forest, large fire flames shoot out of the rocky altar. Witch rituals are being performed at this ceremony.
Those newly converts are asked to come to the front. Goodman Brown and Faith go to the altar and as they are about to be anointed in blood to seal their association with wickedness, Goodman Brown says to Faith to look to heaven and resist…
In the next instant he finds himself standing alone in the forest, next to a wet rock.
Once back home the next morning, Goodman Brown’s trip in the forest was unclear to him if it was a dream or if what occurred was real.
The experience caused Goodman Brown to lose faith in his neighbors and others after seeing his wife, Faith participate in evil witch rituals. Whether real or a fantasy, the trip changed his life forever. Goodman Brown was miserable, unhappy, and suspicious of everyone for the remainder of his life.
