A Letter to my Parents | Dear mom and dad, I just want to say thanks for everything you have done to make my childhood great. We were a very wealthy family when i was a child. I was spoiled when I was young and i had a lot of free time. I spent this time messing around with my friends and being somewhat bad. me and my friends went to many parties. Although we sometimes got in trouble, you were very understanding and didn-t really punish me that much. I even said myself that, ''I lived in sin''. Although this was bad, you still loved me and believed in me. I wanted to be a noble, a knight. I got my first chance when Assisi declared war on their longtime enemy, Perugia."I was among the nobility, what i had always wanted. Although I was held in jail in a dungeon. I caught malaria and wanted to see you guys so i never lost hope that I would get out. When i finally got out, I realized what I had done in life and how I could improve. Thank you for making my childhood great. Love, Francis
At last Francis was among the nobility like he always wanted to be...but chained in a harsh, dark dungeon. All accounts say that he never lost his happy manner in that horrible place. Finally, after a year in the dungeon, he was ransomed. He got a bad case of malaria that helped him reflect on his life. | One day while riding through the countryside, Francis, came face to face with a leper. Repelled by the appearance and the smell of the leper, Francis nevertheless jumped down from his horse and kissed the hand of the leper. When his kiss of peace was returned, Francis was filled with joy. As he rode off, he turned around for a last wave, and saw that the leper had disappeared. | His search for conversion led him to the ancient church at San Damiano. While he was praying there, he heard Christ on the crucifix speak to him, "Francis, repair my church." Francis assumed this meant church with a small c -- the crumbling building he was in. Acting again in his impetuous way, he took fabric from his father's shop and sold it to get money to repair the church. His father saw this as an act of theft and put together with Francis' cowardice, waste of money, and his growing disinterest in money made Francis seem more like a madman than his son. Pietro dragged Francis before the bishop and in front of the whole town demanded that Francis return the money and renounce all rights as his heir.
The bishop was very kind to Francis; he told him to return the money and said God would provide. That was all Francis needed to hear. He not only gave back the money but stripped off all his clothes -- the clothes his father had given him -- until he was wearing only a hair shirt. In front of the crowd that had gathered he said, "Pietro Bernardone is no longer my father. From now on I can say with complete freedom, 'Our Father who art in heaven.'" Wearing nothing but castoff rags, he went off into the freezing woods -- singing. And when robbers beat him later and took his clothes, he climbed out of the ditch and went off singing again. | Years of poverty and wandering had made Francis ill. When he began to go blind, the pope ordered that his eyes be operated on. This meant cauterizing his face with a hot iron. Francis spoke to "Brother Fire": "Brother Fire, the Most High has made you strong and beautiful and useful. Be courteous to me now in this hour, for I have always loved you, and temper your heat so that I can endure it." And Francis reported that Brother Fire had been so kind that he felt nothing at all. | Following the Gospel literally, Francis and his companions went out to preach two by two. At first, listeners were understandably hostile to these men in rags trying to talk about God's love. People even ran from them for fear they'd catch this strange madness! And they were right. Because soon these same people noticed that these barefoot beggars wearing sacks seemed filled with constant joy. They celebrated life.
JOURNAL ENTRY Today I stumbled upon an old church, San Damiano. I t was very run-down church that was falling down. While praying to the San Damiano cross today, I had a vision. The vision as of God telling me to "Go, repair my church". I want to dedicate the rest of my life to repairing the church of God.
There is only one problem. I need money to buy stones and rebuild San Damiano. The only way to get this money is to take my fathers cloth and horse and sell them. This way I will have enough money to buy stones to repair the church and continue to pray there. Now i have to go make my whole plan to steel my father`s goods. I will write more tomorrow.
IN REMEMBRANCE OF SAINT FRANCIS OF ASSISI | November 26, 1182- October 3, 1226 | Died of natural causes
Survived by: Pica, Pietro di Bernardone | He will always be remembered for being the Founder of the Franciscan Order
Birds and animals. A bag of gold and rich raiment at St Francis’ (of Assisi) feet. A winged crucifix with five rays. Stigmata. A crown of thorns. A lighted lamp. A fiery chariot. Animals such as birds, deer, and a wolf. Fire. A skull. | Symbols of Saint Francis
Feast Day | Canonization | July 16, 1228 | By Father Pietro Bernardone | October 4 | For two days the town of Assisi is illuminated by oil lamps burning consecrated oil brought from a different Italian town each year. In America, people bring their pets to be blessed at church | He is remembered for his generosity to the poor and his willingness to minister to the lepers. However, what many people recall about him is his love for animals and nature.
Virtues | Poverty, humility, open to growth, wisdom, charity, and obedience.
Patronage | Animals and the ecology | He would never harm anything- even an animal or nature. | Sick people | He helped a poor leper on the street as well as the poor in general.
 A prayer To Saint Francis
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; and where there is sadness, joy. Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen
Personal Reflection | My saint`s most special quality is his willingness to help everyone. In today`s world, we are constantly judging people based on what they look like or act like. During his time, many people were sick and the sickness would spread easily. Although Francis didn`t want to, he helped out a poor leper on the side of the road. This changed his life forever because the leper he had helped was actually God. I hope that I can grow up and be like Saint Francis.
Francis reached out to help a leper in his time and I can do similar things now. In Chicago, there are many poor homeless people that ask for money on the street. I can give them money and food when they are on the side of the road begging for it. I can also volunteer my time giving back to the community. This could be through volunteering at a soup kitchen or donating food to a pantry. These are just little things that will make me like Saint Francis. | One gift of the Holy Spirit that can make me more like Saint Francis is understanding. This means understanding what I am going through compared to what others are going through. I have a fairly easy life, compared to others around me. I need to appreciate my life more and the gifts that I have more to be more generous and kind. I will no longer thing of myself but think of others.
