18: Chautauqua Speaker, Anita Watson as Mary McNair Mathews, 1869 Virginia City resident. Mary McNair Mathews was a widow with a young son who struck out for Virginia City, Nevada, in 1869 to make a home. Mathews lived on the Comstock for almost nine years and published a book about her experiences in the West. She was an energetic woman who worked a variety of jobs to support herself and her son, including babysitting, letter writing, keeping a boarding house, and working as a seamstress and laundress. She could be kind and charitable, but also bigoted against those of differing races and religions. As complex as the times she lived in, Mary Mathews' life provides a vivid picture of nineteenth century womanhood.
