Sometimes when something important happens to you, you always have a reminder there to help you remember to stay away from a certain danger. In my case, it's a scar directly above and on my eyebrow - a visual note, telling me to stay away from a batter while they are ferociously swinging.

When I was about five, I was playing baseball with my dad in our backyard.

He would pitch me a tennis ball, and I would hit it back with a hard, metal bat.

We did this for a while - sending the ball flying back and forth, but then the accident happened.

My older brother, whose middle name is Trouble, is a year and a half older than I. He came outside and watched us for a while, then he got impatient.

He took the bat from my hands, and my dad pitched a ball to him.

Meanwhile, I was standing dangerously close to him - close enough for the baseball bat to swing back and hit me!

The second that hard, metal, bat hit my face, my smile turned upside down and I was bleeding and crying.

 saf face

My dad had to rush me to St. Mary's Hospital.

They got me into the room where I would be treated, and

and I held my dad's hand while getting twelve stitches.

While I was in the Emergency Room, I was twice as scared as I was before.

Just hearing the constant beeping of the person in the next room - who could be dying - was enough to keep me from falling asleep for a week!

The whole hospital was quiet - too quiet - and that made it all the more horrifying.

My dad kept telling me to look around to different places so I couldn't see what was happening.

In fact, I could only see from one eye because the other was so puffy and swollen.

There were two things I was left with after the end of the horrible day -

a temporary black and blue bruise and the scar - a constant reminder to stay a decent distance away from swinging batters.

Because of my silly and painful accident I will always remember to back away from moving baseball bats.
