FC: Smith Family Vacation 2011

Our 2011 Smith family vacation began Saturday July 16th with a flight to Washington DC with 3 very excited boys. Days of history, adventure, car and boat rides and family time was waiting for us.

Riley's first flight. Carter's second and Trey's third. Bags were packed with plenty to keep the busy. | Riley was so excited to ride on an "O-plane"

We made it to DC Saturday evening. A short drive to Fairfax, VA gave Carter and Riley time for quick nap. Our hotel was great with 3 beds and a great breakfast everyday. Only think missing was a functional pool!

National Air and Space Museum was our first stop on Sunday. The boys were in awe by the huge planes hanging from the ceiling and all the pieces of history. | Day 1 The Smithsonian, Arlington Cemetary and a Washington DC Bike Tour

Picnic lunch on the mall and a nice stroll around the gardens.

Stopped by the Natural History Museum. We didn't stay long as it was packed.

We watched the Changing of the Guards, visited the Eternal Flame and walked around the beautiful grounds of Arlington Cemetary

We took a guided bike tour. It was about 3 hours long. Riley rode in a buggy behind Mommy, Carter and Daddy rode tandum and Trey had his own bike. There were about 10 people in our group. The kids had a great time and we saw more of Washington DC than we could have alone!

We visited 7 monuments on our bike ride. We saw the Jefferson Monument, Lincoln Memorial, FDR, Korean War Memorial, Vietnam Memorial, Washington Monument, World War II Monument and the White House.

Day 2 National Zoo, Mount Vernon, and Dinner at Old Ebbitt Grill

We enjoyed the Orangutans and their special cables that extended across the trees of the zoo, the misters to keep us cool and the $8 PB&J sandwiches.

The grounds on Mount Vernon were beautiful. We took a guided tour of the mansion and the rest of property. We finished our day with a great dinner at Old Ebbit Grill in downtown DC. It is the old restaurant in the city.

Day 3 Baltimore, Fort McHenry, and a Red Sox Game

On day 3 we drove up to Baltimore for the day. We walked around the piers in the 100 degree weather for a little while. Took in a view of the city from the World Trade Center and the headed over to Fort McHenry for more American History.

We bought tickets for the water taxi to take us around the piers and to Fort McHenry. It was a great ride over. On the way back it poured which cooled the day off nicely!

We toured Fort McHenry and then headed back to the piers for a late lunch before heading to Camden Yard for the ballgame

Riley enjoyed a stroll through Baltimore and napped right before the game. He slept through most of the first 4 innings. I think he knew how it was going to end!

Poor Trey broke out the Rally cap but it didn't help our Red Sox this time.

Day 4 On the road to Grandmas house! | Day 5 Relaxing!

After the drive from DC to Connecticut on Wednesday, we spent Thursday relaxing and visiting with all the Connecticut family. Mom and Dad flew in on Wednesday and joined us too. We were spoiled each morning with a huge breakfast by Uncle Rick.

Day 6 Cooperstown and The Baseball Hall of Fame | We took a four hour drive in to the mountains of New York to find the small baseball town of Cooperstown. Mom and Dad came along and we spent the day honoring our favorite Red Sox!

Day 7 More relaxing, Hubbard Park and the Mohegan Sun Casino for the Adults! | We took the boys to Hubbard Park for a view from Castle Craig. Later that day Jeff, Dad, Uncle Rick, Uncle Rob, Carrie and I went to Mohegan Sun for some winning!

Day 8 Shooting Range, a big family meal and a birthday celebration for Grandpa.

We all cooked a big meal. I made Jambalaya and seared scallops. Uncle Rick grilled ribeyes. Uncle Rob and Uncle Chuck joined and we ended the night with a birthday cake for Grandpa who turned 72.

Day 9 Time to head home...on the road back to DC | Day 9 was exhausting! We drove from Connecticut to DC to get on a flight home. When we got to DC we found there was bad weather in Atlanta. We ended up staying one extra night in DC. The kids had no problem with this as they finally got to swim...at 7:30 in the morning on Day 10.
