BC: Trust in the Lord with all your heart . . . And He will direct your path Proverbs 3:5-6
FC: Rory & Shannon
We have been praying for you, and admire your courage, sacrifice, and love for your child. We can't imagine all of the emotions involved in this decision and are incredibly humbled that you would take the time to look at our book. As you consider your child's future, we hope this book will give you a picture of who we are and who we hope to be as parents.

If she does return to work it will be part time with childcare provided by grandparents. | If she returns to work part time, childcare will be provided by grandparents and church daycare. | Shannon
It's hard to put all that Rory is into words. When I first met Rory, I was drawn to him because of his sincere way with people and his energy for life. He is dedicated to his walk with the Lord and gets up early every morning to spend time reading the Bible and hearing from God. He is such a godly leader and I am so glad that God chose for us to spend our lives together. Rory has a dynamic, fun loving personality and is an absolute kid magnet. He is also very talented and smart. He puts everyone he is with at ease and truly is gifted at relating to people. Rory makes everyone that he is around happy to be alive! | About Rory by Shannon
About Shannon by Rory | The most beautiful thing about my wife is the way that the important things in life are fiercely important to her. There is such a quiet confidence and strength in the integrity of her character that is absolutely magnetic to me as her husband. I love watching her care for our family in the way she keeps our home and cares for me, how faithful she is to love and pursue her friends selflessly, and the way she cares and hopes for her patients at the hospital with such a loving heart. All of her faithfulness and care comes from how much she loves Jesus and her confidence in how much He loves her. I love my wife!
Mom & Dad | Rory's Family | Mom, Rory, Gram and Gramp | Dad, Mom, Shann, & Rory | Rory, Mom, & Blake
My folks live a few states away but are excited about moving closer in the near future, especially in anticipation of the first grandchild. My dad owns his own business selling truck parts (I can still remember the big rig he brought to school for kindergarten show and tell). My mom has been a homemaker since I was born and is always using her "supercraftiness" with creative projects at church, in the community, and for my cousins' children that live near them. She can't wait to be a grandma. Their flexible schedules allow them to visit often, and we are ready to have them closer. I have one brother, Blake, who is 30 and is a video game designer living several hours away. He's the smartest guy I've ever met, I love spending time with him. Grandma and Grandpa Yates live in Florida and are excited for great-grandkid number one.
Shannon's Family | Rory, Jonah, Shannon, Heather, John David, Madelyn | Dad and Mom | Shannon's family
I am very close to my family. My parents and twin sister (Heather) live about 15 minutes from Rory and me. I also have an older sister (Tracey) who currently lives in Virginia, but moves around a lot because of her husband's (John) military job. Rory and I enjoy spending time with our niece and nephews. John David is 10, Madelyn is 8 and Jonah is 6. My family loves to go on vacation together and spend time with each other. My mom is a wonderful cook and so most of our time together is centered around a large meal. My parents are looking forward to having a grandchild close by to spoil and love!
Maximus (aka "Tha MaxDog") is certainly the best buddy anyone could hope for. He loves people, animals, and bacon. He's Shannon's daily running partner, Rory's shadow, and everybody's best friend. | Maximus
Cuddly | Not Amused | Jolly | Max is a five year old rescue mutt. We've tried to figure out the types of breeds he comes from, but since he's such a great dog, we decided it just doesn't matter.
We spent four years from 2000 to 2004 living parallel lives but never meeting. We lived in the same town, had lots of friends in common, even went to the same church. Rory noticed Shannon, thought she was beautiful, but she didn't know he existed. It took both of us moving to another city thirty miles south, and Shannon mistaking Rory for another friend of hers from across a gym floor (you're waving at me?) for us to finally meet. We were friends for over a year before we started dating, but once we pursued a romantic relationship, | 2007 | 2007 | 2006 | we met | started dating | Fell in love | Our Story
2009 | 2008 | 2008 | 2008 | Rory proposed | married | 1st house | Honeymoon | it was clear that we'd always be together. Rory proposed after eight months of dating, and we were married four months later. In four years of marriage we've been through the difficulty of unemployment, miscarriage, and infertility, all of which have been hard; but by the faithfulness and tenderness of God, have served to draw us closer together. We love the gift our marriage is to one another, stand secure in God's goodness even in hard times, and look forward to the future while enjoying the blessings of the present.
Our Home | (Workin' on the Grass)
We live in a great neighborhood that's getting younger with lots of families having kids. We are only a couple minutes away from family, church, and one of the best elementary schools in our city. We have sweet neighbors in a very safe and quiet environment. There are always people walking our street with their kids and dogs, or out doing yard work.
Family Traditions | Indiana Christmas | Since Rory was born, his mother's family has gathered for Christmas where he grew up in Indiana. The cousins (and now their kids too) cook Christmas chili on the 24th, the aunts make a traditional Slovak feast for Christmas Eve dinner, and the kids always rush to bed in anticipation of Santa's arrival when they hear sleigh bells (which is usually cousin John outside the window). It is an awesome time to enjoy being family.
Lake Summers | One of the favorite pastimes of Shannon's family is to spend time at the lake. We love to ski, tube and just swim in the lake. With a pontoon and a speedboat, we spend all day eating, playing and hanging out on the water. After a day on the lake, we head back to the lake house where Shannon's mom, "Nonna", cooks a delicious dinner and we share fun times with family and friends.
What Our Friends Want to Tell You About Us | "Staying with Rory and Shannon in their home; I received nothing but love, compassion, consideration, and friendship. I really enjoy their genuineness, their sense of humor, and their ability to love people for who they are." Barry Holloway | "I have watched Rory and Shannon serve and love so many others and now I can't wait for them to love, care for, and share life with a sweet child.God bless!" Krysta Rupp | "Rory and Shannon's strong foundation in Christ and the love and respect they have for each other is a testament for how great of parents they will be." Derek Schewene
A perfect example of Proverbs 20:6, "Many will say they are loyal friends, but who can find one who is truly reliable?" Jean Ha | "We can think of no two people that have had such a consistent presence in our lives, demonstrating faithfulness to God, family, and friends than Rory and Shannon." -David & Amy Manning | "Rory and Shannon are a great example of what 'serving others before yourselves' really means. They will be excellent parents one day and I can't wait to see what God has in store for them!!" Paige Martin
 Friends and Family
From top left clockwise: Shannon and Maddie (niece) playing Indian Princess; us out for a bike ride; running in the Indiana winter; Shannon whippin' up breakfast; with Jordan on a flat tire adventure; drilling a well with Eddie in Nicaragua; hiking Yosemite National Park; Shannon and Heather (sister) finishing a half ironman triathlon neck and neck.
Our Hobbies | Rory Enjoys cycling, studying, meaningful time with friends, and going to the movies. The perfect day is getting up early to read, playing outside, and finishing the evening with a homemade meal. Shannon Enjoys swimming, cycling, running, cooking, water sports, going to the movies, and spending time with friends. The perfect day is getting up early, going for a long bike ride, eating a big lunch, taking a long nap and then having friends over for dinner.
Us dressing up as a Vanderbilt missed field goal for a Halloween party. | Out of all the hobbies & interests we have, our favorite is just being together. It's so good to have married your best buddy. Doing things and going places is fun. But most of all, we enjoy the process of just being there together, wherever there is.
Having Fun | Whether it's watching a movie, making a meal or just curling up on the couch; we are going to have fun and enjoy each other. We are so excited for the chance to bring a child into our family to share the love that we have for each other.
Our Marriage | Without Jesus our marriage does not exist. He's our hope; the one who has loved us no matter what so we can love one another selflessly. He's the one who has forgiven us so we can forgive one another. He's the one that has changed us so we know there is hope in every conflict we face. He's given us a great marriage where we play roles that make each other better. Shannon is the planner that makes sure things hold together. Under her watch, everyone eats well, has a safe and welcoming place to call home, and stays connected to the important things and people in our lives. Rory is the energizer that makes sure we're going places and having fun while doing so. His love for fun and people gives the Yates household purpose and excitement.
Though the differences in our personalities make us stronger, they also keep us aware that we always need to be growing in our communication with one another, our willingness to understand the other person, and our ability to put the other person first so that we stay on the same team. The past three years, trying to conceive and struggling with infertility, has challenged and deepened the growth of our marriage. With God's help and the added strength of friends and family, we've graciously become like minded in this decision to adopt. We are excited to be parents and feel it is a great privilege to bring a child into our family in the same way that, in love, God adopts us into His.
Parenting is something we are ready to experience. Both of us have experience with children both through our jobs and the kids of our families and friends. We've seen many different parenting styles and are humbled and excited about the challenge. We desire a home full of fun, love, and joy, but have as our first concern the development of the character of our son or daughter. We will have a loving home where our child will learn to be compassionate towards others and treat everyone with love and respect. | Parenting | Shannon doing occupational therapy
We know a huge part of this decision is the anticipated character of your child. We are committed to finding a way to make sure our child knows right from wrong, they treat others with love and humility, that we mean what we say, and they can trust us as we work to lovingly develop their character. | Proverbs 23:24 "The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice; he who fathers a wise son will be glad in him." | Discipline
sunny days | Our child's adoption will always be a part of their story from the first time we tell it to them. Though we will add the details of how our child came to be our precious gift as they grow, we want to secure our child in the love you are living out for them in this decision, our anticipation of their arrival, and their very great worth. Adoption is a beautiful thing, close to the very heart of God. Since, through Jesus, God adopted us into His family, we consider it a great privilege to participate in the very thing our Heavenly Father cherishes as well. | Adoption
spring is here! | Baby Girl | We would delight in describing you to your child with great admiration and respect. We will send updates and pictures of your child for as long as you desire and will always respect your privacy.
We are so humbled by the possibility of sharing our life with your precious child and hope this book gives you a glimpse of what that life would be like. We want you to know that our home is warm and happy and will always be a place of love and encouragement.
Together, we will always celebrate life . . . and we will always celebrate you. We wish you courage and peace in the days ahead and will pray for the decisions you are making for your child. Thank you for learning more about us. Sincerely, Rory & Shannon
