34: ANNA - We were talking about Easter and the Easter Bunny. She was wondering how the Easter bunny got so big and where he left the presents. I was telling her about what Easter is really about and that the Easter Bunny isn’t real. So then she asks, Well what about Santa Claus? I didn’t know what to say so I asked her what she thought. She says, “He isn’t real either, is he mom? But who leaves the presents then?” She didn’t take long to figure out it was mom and dad. Anna asked me one day if they got more money from the tooth fairy for the bigger teeth. I needed her to clarify if she meant the teeth in the back or her permanent teeth. She meant permanent. I told her that we aren’t supposed to lose those, so no, there would be no money. Her next question was, “Well, did Grandpa get money for all his teeth he lost?” After a birthday party, Anna was telling me that she was hungry and was talking about the food that was there. She said that there were these triangle things with pineapple in them that she didn’t like, and then some muffins that she didn’t like, and then some cookies that she kind of didn’t like, but didn’t not like them so she ate them. | OH THE THINGS THEY WILL SAY... | SARAH - Mom was getting ready to leave for a girls night out and Joe was talking to the girls about watching a movie with them. Sarah says, “Daddy, instead of wasting energy watching a movie, could I play outside instead?” When asking if she was going to be able to cheerlead in the Upward program, Sarah says, “Daddy, I hope I can, it will be a dream come true!”. We were talking about puzzles and being puzzled and Sarah says, “I’m puzzled, said the Puzzle, “PART OF MY BODY IS MISSING!”
35: I had given the girls some expectations while they were with me during a meeting at church. Afterwards, I was praising them for the good job they did. I told them that they “met my expectations.” Sarah replied, “No I didn’t. They didn’t say Hi!” Joe and Sarah were talking about tying shoes. Sarah was saying that she wished she were still in Kindergarten because they would help you tie them. According to her, in first grade they make you do it by yourself and in second grade, “Don’t even think about asking”. After riding the Joker ride at 6 Flags, Sarah wasn’t real happy about the ride because it made her tummy feel bad. Joe mentioned something about losing her tummy and she said, “It is like we are playing hide and seek and it has a really good hiding spot.” REBEKAH - One Sunday at lunch I asked Bekah what she learned at Sunday School and at first she said she couldn’t remember. About 5 minutes later, she said, “We talked about God’s cousin.” It took me a little while to realize she was talking about John the Baptist. She also told us that he ate bugs and wore clothes that looked like animals. Too cute that she called him God’s cousin instead of Jesus’. Joe was saying prayers with the girls one night and asked them what was one thing they wanted to pray for. Bekah’s response was, “for mommy to like me.” Anna had responded to Bekah in a not so very nice tone and I asked her what caused her to answer like that. Bekah calmly replied, “She didn’t have to, she just did.” Oh, the wisdom of a four year old. Bekah likes to “trick” me by saying things that aren’t true. When she comes clean she says, “Ha, Ha, I tricked you. What are you going to do with me, throw me in the trash?” (Apparently , mom has said that to her before.) (Oct. 2010)
