FC: Baumann Family Les Pépinieres D'Bollwiller
1: ~The Baumann Family~ A scrapbook history of the family from France and the Americas. The documents and pictures displayed here, hopefully will ensure that the legacy of the Baumann name and history will carry on for future generations. On the next page is a brief history of the Baumann family in America as was written in the mid 1950's when the original Baumann florist, greenhouses and land were being sold to make way for a new shopping center. This translation was put together by Ward Baumann and his cousin Douglas Baumann in about 1956. The Baumann Florist is now part of the history of our family and of the town of Rahway, NJ. The memories and pictures here, were compiled by Ward Scott Baumann. | Baumann Hazelnut - On the back cover a Charles Baumann Camellia
2: ~BAUMANN’S FLORIST~ In 1750 the Bollwiller Nurseries were founded in Alsace, France by Johannes Baumann. The nursery under the name of Baumann Bros. attained a worldwide celebrity which it maintains to this day. Eugene Achilles Baumann was born in 1817 and studied at the Botanical Gardens at Karlsruhe. In 1854 he came to the USA and established himself as a landscape gardener. A large portion of the planting maps for Central Park, New York were made by Mr. Baumann. After having acquired some nurseries in Morrisania, New York he moved to Rahway, NJ in 1858 where there there was more land available and he was able to establish a larger nursery. Part of the nursery included the present location of Roosevelt School. The large oak trees in the school grounds are remnants of those planted in nursery rows many years ago. His first born son, Ernest Joseph Phillip Baumann traveled on his own after his father’s passing away and began a nursery/florist in Jacksonville, Fl. He subsequently went to New Orleans and married a woman by the name of Virginia Pauer. She was from Mexico City where her father was a prominent lawyer. Ernest and his wife moved back to Mexico City and raised their family there. It has been reported that Ernest Baumann worked on Chapultepec Park in Mexico City in redeveloping it. | The third generation in America, Baumann brothers, John, Kenneth, Adolph and Wilbur, helped in the construction of greenhouses on property now occupied by the Acme Market on St. Georges Ave. Additional greenhouses were erected on the south side of Race Street and between Jefferson and Madison Avenues until the total range included 100,000 square feet of glass area. In 1924 a retail shop was constructed on the corner of St. Georges Ave. and West Hazelwood Ave. which was occupied by the business until October 1956. In 1955 negotiations were begun for the sale of the property between Hazelwood Ave. and Race Street. A new retail showroom was constructed in 1956 on the corner of Cross Street and West Hazelwood Ave, on property which at one time had been the family homestead. Thus beginning a new cycle for the fourth generation, Douglas and Ward Baumann. Douglas Baumann passed away in the mid 1970’s and Ward Baumann continued the florist business until the early 1980’s at which time he sold the business and retired. He passed away in1985. To this day there is something to say about having Baumann horticulture running in your blood. The above mentioned Doug Baumann’s grandson Michael is involved in his own landscaping business. His cousin, Tim Vail is a renowned arborist in Maine. Scott also had a landscaping business and we all maintain extensive gardens.
