2: The Early Years...

3: MAKING MEMORIES | Jack grew up in South Pekin, Illinois, the youngest of 10 children. At 16, he lied about his age and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Once Jack served his tour of duty in the South Pacific, he returned to the United States and was stationed in San Francisco until his time to be discharged. He decided to stay in California and moved in with his brother, Harry and his wife, Goldie. They lived in Watsonville where he got a job. Now you can imagine – a young serviceman in California! There were plenty of stories of fast cars and all the fun he had. I think fun followed Jack wherever he went! He even took up rodeo riding while he lived there. After a couple of years, he got tired of the rain and the fog so he decided to move back to Illinois. Margaret grew up in Havelock, Iowa. Her mother ran the local tavern, called Quade’s. Her only sibling, Earl, was nine years older and helped run the tavern. Margaret and her mother lived in an apartment in the back of the tavern. After high school, Margaret worked in Laurens as a bookkeeper. From there she went onto work at the County Courthouse in Pocahontas as the Deputy County Treasurer. Her and her friends spent weekends at the local dance hall, where eventually she met Jack.

4: How They Met...

5: { | { | LOVE | Jack and Margaret met when he came to Havelock with his buddy from the service, Chick Fowler. They met at the local dance hall called the Ridotto. The first time Jack saw Margaret he said to himself, "that's the girl for me!" He went up to her at the dance and asked, "where have you been all of my life?" And the rest was history...
