S: Elizabeth & Doug
FC: Elizabeth & Doug
We are Elizabeth and Doug and we want to thank you for taking the time to learn more about us. We would like to start by expressing our respect, admiration, and thanks for your courage right now. We can't imagine the feelings you have or will experience in your decision to plan an adoption for your child. We are excited that you would consider us and we pray that this book will give you a glimpse of us and our loving family.
Doug loves to do anything outdoors, spend time with his family, and he has a PhD in Chemistry. He likes to fish and does wood-working. | He has worked as a chemist for ten years and works around 40 hours each week. He helps with childcare transportation a few days each week. | Doug
Elizabeth is a biochemist, works for a pharma company, and does triathlons. She also knits and does hand-sewing projects in her spare time. | If she returns to work part time, childcare will be provided by grandparents and church daycare. | Elizabeth | She plans to take time off from her job to care for a new child. When she returns to work, childcare will be provided by grandparents and the same daycare their child Satchel attends.
I don't remember much of life before Doug because the second I met him I knew my life would be complete. He has always accepted me for who I am, is kind, generous with his love and time, and he makes me laugh like no one else. He is a true partner in every aspect of our lives together - from cheering me on at triathlons to taking his turn with diaper duty. He is a playful and patient dad who is ready to get down on the floor and play firetrucks at a moment's notice. His endless patience inspires me! Doug is a great husband and fantastic father. He will love and cherish a new child with the same love and encouragement we get from him. | About Doug by Elizabeth
About Elizabeth by Doug | Elizabeth is a beautiful person, obviously on the outside but also in spirit. She cares for everyone around her and often goes out of her way to make someone feel special. Satchel loves his mommy more than anyone and she adores him. She is a patient, encouraging, enthusiastic mom who always seems eager to read one more book or do one more dance party. Currently she is making a quiet book for Satchel in the evenings. She has a gift for connecting and understanding others and Satchel is already learning these skills. Elizabeth is a wonderful mom to Satchel and is eager to be mommy to a new child.
Our Family | We became parents in 2010 when Satchel joined our family. This is our first photograph together and our hearts have not stopped singing. Satchel is a loving, musical, outgoing child and he is really looking forward to being a big brother.
We love being a family - whether hanging out at home or enjoying a weekend at the beach, our time together is special to us. We put on music and dance, make pancakes together on weekend mornings, or play Candy Land. We look forward to sharing those moments with another child.
We met while working for the same company and quickly realized that we were destined to be more than co-workers. Doug proposed on a ski trip two years later and we were married the summer of 2000. We accomplished a lot before Satchel came into our lives but none of that seems nearly as important now that we have a family. | Our Story
Our lives really began when we adopted Satchel in 2010. We became a family that day and our purpose in life became clear: to raise our children to be strong, loving, and self-assured so that they make their world better by being in it. We are really excited at the prospect of adding another child to our family.
A little about Satchel | Satchel's name was inspired by the baseball player Satchel Paige, a star pitcher from the Negro Leagues who helped integrate Major League Baseball in the 1940's and is in the Baseball Hall of Fame. We chose this name because it celebrates our son's heritage.
In the park with his buddy Gabe | Soccer class! | A pony ride with friend Michala
sunny days | We believe in age-appropriate talk about adoption with our son and future child. We read books about adoption and let our child ask questions at their own pace. Our families are familiar with talking about adoption because of our adopted family members. We will make sure our child knows the love of their parents and feel secure in their family. | Adoption
spring is here! | Hair is one way we make an effort to connect with our child's background. One of our friends owns a family barber shop and cuts Satchel's hair. Elizabeth is learning a lot about caring for black hair from a friend and is learning how to do styles like two-stranded twists and a variety of braids. | We will always describe you to your child in a respectful and loving light because of the choice you are making. We will send updates and pictures of your child as frequently and as long as you wish. We will always honor your privacy.

I'm the oldest of six children, have 15 nieces and nephews and much of my family lives in halfway across the country. We visit a couple of times a year, and as you might imagine it is hard to get everyone in the same place at the same time. My mom is the center of the family and she adores all her grandchildren. This photo of Mom and Satchel hangs in Satchel's room - he calls my parents Muir and PawPaw. Of all the nieces and nephews, we are particularly close with my nephew Brad.

I am very close to my family and I'm blessed to have them nearby. Gamma and Papa love being grandparents and we see them nearly every weekend for dinner or a family activity, and they are willing and requested babysitters. My brother JR and his wife Amanda also live close, and their two kids James and Abby go to the same daycare as Satchel so they get to see each other every day. Satchel and his cousin Abby are especially close, and Abby can't wait to help care for a new baby. We love to vacation together; we usually go skiing or to the beach, and we have gotten to go to some fun locations together, like France and the Caribbean. I love being part of a tight-knit family!
 Friends and Family
Satchel as DJ Lance Rock from Yo Gabba Gabba! | Our favorite way to spend our time is to just be together. Whether it's going to the park, building a snowman, or goofing around at home: we enjoy our lives together. We are so excited to bring another child into our family to share the love we have for each other.
 Having Fun
Our Home | We think we have the best of both worlds - we live in the country but can get into the city in just a few minutes. There is a large park across the street with playgrounds, fields, and walking trails - we spend a lot of time there. Our house has 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, and a large playroom. | Our bedroom is upstairs on the front of the house
The patio is where we gather with friends in warm weather. We rotate hosting a "First Friday" dinner with the neighbors almost every month. Behind the house is a large vegetable garden. | The baby's room is the corner bedroom on the back of the house. It has two windows and is airy and bright.
This is our kitty, Simi. She loves to snuggle on our laps and she is very good with children. | Pets
Simi | Ginger | Ginger, Elizabeth's brother's dog, comes to visit. We want a dog of our own when Satchel and our future child are a little older.
Our Marriage | We have been married for thirteen years and believe that our marriage has gotten stronger over time. We have learned how to communicate with each other and ask for each other's help when we need it. We share a lot of work around the home but do divide some responsibilities: Elizabeth manages the menu and social calendar, Doug mows the grass and does most home maintenance, Elizabeth manages Satchel's school activities, Doug manages the finances. We like to do home projects and work in our garden together. We are a great team and work together to make decisions. Our family goal is to raise strong, happy, loving children who make the world they live in a better place.
One of the ways that our marriage has been strengthened is through our decision to adopt. We tried to conceive for several years and went through two traumatic miscarriages before deciding that adoption was the way we wanted to start our family. We have been very blessed to have the unconditional support of our families and friends as we made this decision. Both of us have family members who are adopted and we can't imagine our families without them, so adoption was not a hard decision for us to make. We feel it is a privilege to bring a new child into our family.
We love being parents! We believe that children do best when there is a balance between discipline and fun and we strive to incorporate both into the way we live. We try to teach Satchel to be respectful and compassionate to everyone and will do the same for another child. | Parenting
Our discipline style is age appropriate and we are committed to a parent-child relationship based on trust. We will ensure that a child knows that we mean what we say and they can count on us for love, support, and consistency. | Our parents and grandparents were great parenting role models for us both and we believe that our partnership makes for a great parenting team. | Discipline
We are so excited about the possibility of sharing our lives with your precious child and hope this book has given you a glimpse of what that life would be like. We want you to know that our home is warm and happy and will always be a place of love and encouragement.
Together, will we always celebrate life . . . and we will always celebrate you. We wish you courage in the days ahead and will pray for you and the decisions you will make for your child. Thank you for learning more about us. Sincerely, Elizabeth & Doug
