1: There are two lasting bequests we can give our children One is roots, the other is wings. - Hodding Carter | Dear Dad, As we celebrate your 90th birthday with you, we want to take the time to remember and record some of the things that we learned from you and Mom. From little tips to make life easier, to bigger lessons such as how to be a good friend and enjoy what life has to offer. These are the things we carry with us in our daily lives that help us to be who we are. We are grateful for what you taught us and grateful that we have the opportunity to share them here! 6: Live well, laugh often, love much
7: Enjoy the sunset. Always check the weather. Wear a hat to stay warm. The rule of thumb for good design is threes and fives. Never leave your dessert unattended. Organize your tools and your kitchen. Read good books. Sing and play with your grandchildren. Everything in moderation - including moderation!
8: Just do your best. Keep a sense of humor. Be mindful of the needs of others. Respect others, even those with whom you disagree. Nurture your gardens and your relationships.
10: Enjoy the journey. Take the back roads. Map-reading and itinerary-planning are essential life skills.
12: Cultivate your curiosity. | Ask good questions and you will bring out the best in others. Do crossword puzzles to expand your vocabulary. Go to college. Take road trips. Long cuts can be more interesting than short cuts. Proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation improve communication and make your mother happy.
15: Share your home with four-legged friends, they will fill your life with joy
16: a good cook is like a sorceress who dispenses happiness | Lick the beaters. Taste along the way. Use fresh herbs. Quiche the cook. Keep your knives sharpened. Begin preparing dinner right after breakfast. Mise en place. Sear. Pea soup soothes the soul. Share your recipes.
17: Mom_ | Split Pea Soup | 2 leeks, 1/2 bag carrots 2 c. lg cut celery 1 onion diced 2 cloves garlic minced 1/2 c. parsley minced 2 cans chicken broth + liquid to 8 cups 1# split peas 3 bay leaves, 1/2 t. marjoram 1/2 smoked pork butt, diced | Wash peas. In broth & water cook peas, ham, almost 2 hours with onions, garlic, parsley, marjoram, thyme. When almost smooth add carrots, leeks, celery.
