3: Starlett is ellens black best friend andStarletta begins to crush on a white boy. More importantly, it speaks to Starletta's bravery and her strange attitude in daring to do something that is not only insane, but socially impossible. During the 1970s, in Ellen's southern community, it was completely unacceptable for a black kid to be friends with a white person. but, her friendship with Ellen is an act of bravery. Starletta also atempts to break a rule when Ellen offered starlette to stay the night with her.It is during her sleepover at Ellen's that Starletta is at her most nervous. She is rather quiet, and does not like to talk very much, though it seems that she and Ellen share an unspeakable closeness. This close strengthened as Ellen confesses to her the racial opinion she once had. Starletta gives little reaction, but she accepts Ellen's apology and, in her quiet, seems to forgive Ellen for her former opinion. This scene illuminates Starletta's profound sense of understanding. She does not argue with Ellen or even seem hurt at her confession. Instead, she simply and silently overlooks Ellen's former biases, just as she overlooks the boundaries placed on her by discriminatory racial and social rules. | Main characters..starlette:)

6: The turning point | In Chapter 12, food is once more representative of love, comfort, and stability. As Ellen eats her breakfast before school, she compares it to the breakfast featured on the side of the cereal box, complete with toast, juice, eggs, milk, and cereal, which matches hers exactly. In the past, Ellen has had to scrounge for food and, at times, has had barely enough money to buy groceries. Now, Ellen is comforted in knowing that she will always have plenty of food and no longer must feel guilty for eating, which she mentions as some of her favorite aspects of living with her new mama.
