3: Self Respect | Sometimes I cry, sometimes I don’t. Sometimes I sleep, sometimes I won’t. Depends on my homework, I might even lie. It really just depends on how much I try. I’m not (the average) Prince Charming. And I ain’t a stereotype. But I learned to believe in myself Because I am me. I’m not a child. My worth is not determined by society’s price tags. No matter what I see, I will always be me.
5: Where I am from I am from tissues from Kleenex and Kirkland. I am from the red bars of the golden gate bridge I am from the lilies of the valley, the emeralds in the quartz veins I am from the Korean new years and dark black hair from Joon and Li and Choi. I am from the narrow minded thoughts and short legs. From fables and folktales. I am from a cross upon Calvary I'm from San Francisco and Korea, Kimchi and Ramen. From the War my grandfather fought the toils of my ancestors and the sweat of my father’s brow. I am from the worn scrap books in the old cardboard box stored away in my closet.
7: Mother Kitchen My Mother's kitchen The oven stands in its corner ticken The black void that has consumed many a dead chicken. The main course of fresh pot roast sits on the table Its aroma is that out of a fable The peas still a fresh green hue The mashed potatoes and beef sticky like glue My mother walks in to ring the dinner bell Its sound falls over us like a sleeping spell.
