3: After World War Two, struggle for power. In 1949, Mao Zedong ended up winning, and started Communist China. He took away basic rights and executed millions. Power ended with his death in 1976, which leaves off at the time of Xiaojun. | Chairman Mao

4: When growing up, she lived with nine other people. Electricity was only available on occasion, the only toilet was a bucket, and chicken soup was a New Years' Feast. | 1970s or 1980s | Rural China

5: On a Self-Sufficient Farm

6: Harsh at school, and many people had arranged marriages in China | School was VERY strict with harsh punishments. | Xiaojun heard that there were slaves in America and snow all-year around.

7: Escaping China was a difficult and dangerous endeavor. They did not let Xiaojun's family simply leave the country. | Father left first with his second uncle's ID. | After father made money in America, the family bought fake IDs and plane tickets. | Xiaojun left most of her possessions and was terrified | 1 | 2 | 3

8: Her mom wanted her to do well in school, get a secretary job, and marry a Chinese man. | Settled in New York's Chinatown | Started going to school, and was called Debbie.

9: Currently does chores for allowance | Drawbacks in America: Less quaility time with family and kids pick on her. | Still... | She likes AMERICA better!

10: Took care of her younger siblings | Helped cook food | Got the water when there was no running water. | Chores | Similarity: Loyal to parents

11: Similarity: Take care of younger siblings | She changed younger siblings' diapers starting at 6 years old. | I help younger siblings with homework.

12: We are both unsure of our futures. | Her parents want her to be a secretary, but she dreams of being an actress, doctor, or model. | My parents want me to be a doctor, but I still need time to think about it.

13: Parents | We both study hard. | Xiaojun actually studies for 4 hours each night.

14: DIFFERENCE: Parental limits | She has strict parents, and little freedom. | She can't date until 22 years old | Must marry a Chinese man, but no boyfriends yet.

16: Grandfather | Grandmother | Great Grandfather | A symbol for life and struggle: KANGAROO | Kangaroos are put into captivity; Xiaojun can't escape her captivity in China. | Kangaroos hold young in their pouch; Xiaojun took care of younger siblings. | Kangaroos jump high; now in America, Xiaojun can jump to a high status.

17: Most interesting part of Xiaojun's life: She did not have any modern basics. | Only bathroom was a bucket | No TV except in school | No running water in house, and hardly ever electricity
